September is national Big Brothers Big Sisters and Childhood Cancer month.

So on Saturday, teams of two competed against each other in downtown Prince Albert, in the first annual Amazing Race event. Over 22.000 dollars was raised at this weekends event.

Allyson Wall is the Marketing and Recruitment and Coordinator with Big Brothers Big Sisters. Wall said the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Prince Albert and Team 4 Hope partnered together to host the fundraiser.

The creator of the race and Team 4 Hope racer, Janna Anderson, said she wanted to organize a fun event and competitive event to raise money and awareness for both causes.

“We are fundraising for Team 4 Hope which is pediatric cancer research group that fundraises for specifically Neuroblastoma,” said Anderson. “It’s apparent in kids usually under the age of two. Also the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Prince Albert. ”

Anderson added the fundraiser was based on the hit TV show The Amazing Race.

Anderson said the rules were simple. Teams of two participated in 20 different challenges at 17 local businesses. After the completion of a challenge at each site, the teams were given an envelope directing them to their next site. Each team had approximately two hours to complete all 20 challenges.
After the race winners were decided based on a point system; each team received points in fundraising, team spirit, and each completed challenge.
Too Hot To Handle, team leader Corliss Ratti said she decided to participate in the race for her birthday, not only because she loves watching the show.

“It’s a great cause and I think it’s a lot of fun and we know Prince Albert, were from here so seemed to make sense that we would participate in a community event, “said Ratti.

Shane Lecorre explained why they chose their team name.

“I’m a firefighter and Corliss sells candles, so that’s why we picked that name,” said Lecorre.

Older sister’s Stacey France from team Terrible Trio said she has only watched The Amazing Race once or twice but she wanted to try the challenge with her sister.

“We thought it would be pretty fun, it has never occurred in Prince Albert before and it was a really great cause with the Big Brothers and the Big sisters,” said France.

Her younger sister Kristina Slater said she wouldn’t want to do the race with anyone else.

“I don’t think I’d be able to do it with anyone else, we can understand each other without talking, so I think she is probably the best partner,” said Slater.

Team 4 Hope was founded by Lisa Hopkins in 2011 to mark the 10-year celebration anniversary of completing treatments of her son's Stage 4 Neuroblastoma.

According to Kids Health.org, Neuroblastoma is a rare disease in which a solid tumor (a lump or mass caused by uncontrolled or abnormal cell growth) is formed by special nerve cells called neuroblasts.

Wall said Big Brothers Big Sisters is a community supported organization which helps kids through mentoring.

Although, there are currently 18 active matches in Prince Albert there are 33 kids, aged 5-25 on the waiting list for a Big Brother or Sister.

Wall said it’s important they raise money so these kids can follow a good example.

“Role models right, mentors, having positive influence in their life,” said Wall.

Anderson said they had a lot of support for the race.

Their sponsors were the Northern Lights Casino, Shaw cable and each of the 17 businesses involved during the race.

Anderson hopes this will be an annual event.

“The first time is always more difficult, “said Anderson. “It’s going to get easier and bigger and better as the years go on. ”
