UPDATE: More charges laid following young boy’s death

Jul 29, 2014 | 2:00 PM

A man accused of driving drunk and killing a young boy is facing additional charges.

Gordon Morris Crain, 51, from Muskoday First Nation, was charged in connection with the fatal crash on the Muskoday First Nation Saturday night.

Jared Bear, 11, who was riding his bike with friends, was struck by a vehicle. He would later die in hospital.

Crain was initially charged with one count of impaired driving causing death, and one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

He has also now been charged with one count of criminal negligence causing death, one count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm, and two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

The latest charges have to do with the other boys who were at the scene and come after the Crown reviewed the file.

“Apparently bodily harm, and this is true, can be a really trivial or minor injury, like a scrape or a bruise or a bump. In keeping with that we had to lay the additional charges,” said Staff Sgt. Chad McLeod with Prince Albert RCMP.

“The other young fellow that got hit wasn’t seriously hurt, never went to the hospital, but actually we did take photographs of some injuries. So they were significant enough for them to show up on camera.”

Bail hearing postponed

On Tuesday afternoon Crain smiled and saluted his wife, sisters, and other family during his second court appearance.

As the judge in Prince Albert Prince Albert Provincial Court demanded his attention, Crain said “I just miss them.”

The court heard that he is cousins with the victim Jared Bear from a man involved in sentencing circles, and Crain’s sisters confirmed it.

A bail report had not yet been ordered, so the bail hearing was set forward to Aug. 6. In the meantime, potential homes that Crain could reside in while on bail will be looked at. They could potentially be set up for electronic monitoring of Crain.
