A family of four is coping with the tragic loss of their home after a devastating fire Friday morning in Neuanlage.

Two family members remain in a Saskatoon hospital where they are being treated for burns. The father of the man who owned the house described the terrifying moments before it burned to the ground.

Henry Zacharias said his son was making breakfast at around 6 a.m. when he heard a crackling sound behind him. He turned around to find the Christmas tree on fire. It was too late to do anything about it, so he turned attention to waking up his wife, and kids.

They headed for the front door. But it wouldn't open. They tried the back door. It wouldn't open either.

“Finally I got to the side entrance door, and by that point, figured it out …. these doors are locked … it was a vacuum in the house,” said Zacharias.

He said it took all his strength to pry the door open. Once he did, the family got into the car, and raced to Saskatoon, his son, and wife badly burned.

Zacharias said they are expected to be okay.

“The rest is monetary stuff. So we'll get through that. We'll get through that for sure,” Zacharias added.
