Freezing night for dog abandoned at doors of SPCA

Dec 19, 2013 | 4:49 PM

It was a sight the Prince Albert SPCA hopes to never see.

Around 7:45 a.m. on Thursday SPCA director of operations Leanne Roberts showed up at work to find a dog tied to the fence. Along with the dog there was a note that read its name was Coco, she was good with kids and that her owner could not care for her properly anymore.

Roberts said she experiences this all too often.

“It happens more frequently than people realize. What made it worse today was the fact that the temperatures were so low and that they hadn’t even bothered to leave anything for her to lay on, you know, to get her off of the snow,” Roberts said.

Luckily, Coco is doing fine and “enjoying life” as she’s staying warm in the SPCA. Roberts said a man has even stopped by to give her a toy.

“For now she’s not showing any ill effects. She’s very skinny, but, you know, all she’s going to need is some de-worming and she’s going to be fine,” she said.

However, even though Coco doesn’t seem to be seriously harmed from the night in the cold, Roberts still can’t believe these actions continue to happen.

“It still boggles my mind that people think it’s OK to do this to animals whether it’s a dog or a cat. To abandon it in such a way, it just isn’t right.”

The SPCA has received adoption inquiries for Coco, but she has not yet found her forever home.

If anyone has any information regarding Coco’s owner please contact the SPCA at 306-763-6110.

SPCA at full capacity

Currently the SPCA is at full capacity, so anyone looking to adopt a pet, Roberts said now is a good time.

“As long as we are over capacity, we are asking the citizens of Prince Albert who find a stray cat or dog to contact the SPCA and house the pet until we have kennels available to accommodate them,” said Roberts. “Any assistance the public can offer is greatly appreciated.”

Every one of these pets has an owner and it is very sad to have these pets here instead of in their homes. We are in the process of contacting other rescue groups to see if they can take any of the dogs/puppies”.
