First Nations culture is being celebrated right now in Prince Albert during Urban Treaty Day.

An expected 1500 First Nations people will be lining up to receive their treaty annuity of five dollars.

The family-friendly annual event is in recognition of treaties First Nations people signed in the late 1800’s.

Donnie Desjarlais co-organizer of the event, said it is more of a celebration of First Nations culture and the treaties than just a day to get the five dollar annuity payment.

“Urban Treaty was started to allow people who don’t have access to get back to their home reserves that live in the city to come and collect their treaty money,” he said.

“But it’s also meant to be a fun event even though it’s a serious event with the treaties and all, but it’s a social gathering meant for people who can’t otherwise get back to their reserves.”

Urban Treaty Day is a meant to be a fun family event for everyone. All day live entertainment and various children’s activities will take place at the riverbank. It will also feature a free lunch that will be available until the food runs out.

“The event is open to everybody,” said Desjarlais. This is a city event so we want everyone that is in the city to be able to come.”
