PA lawyer suspended

Jun 1, 2012 | 11:28 AM

Prince Albert lawyer Kris Eggum is currently suspended from working in his field.

On May 2 he was no longer able to practice law while the Law Society of Saskatchewan investigates allegations that Eggum misappropriated funds and represented clients despite serious conflicts of interest. Tim Huber of the Law Society said they began the investigation after several complaints.

“It was a mixture of things that came to the attention of the law society and direct complaints from the public,” he said.

Any more details couldn’t be released while the investigation is still ongoing. Eggum’s lawyer Keith Prior said that in the meantime they’ll have to wait to see what unfolds.

“He’s certainly been a well-respected respected lawyer throughout the province and it’s kind of a shame that there are some complaints,” Prior said. “We’ll have to see whether they have some merit or not.”

Prior met Eggum over thirty years ago when he was already practicing law in Prince Albert. He said Eggum is now in his 70’s and has been thinking about retiring for a few years. Lawyers cannot retire, however, while on suspension.

Eggum, who is a partner at the law firm Eggum Abrametz & Eggum, has not applied for a review of a suspension. It will continue until the investigation is lifted, or until a hearing where the matter is concluded.

Eggum has been practicing law for over forty years. He has never before been prosecuted by the law society for allegations of conduct unbecoming.
