Police targeting distracted drivers, seatbelts

Apr 17, 2012 | 5:05 PM

For the rest of the week police around the province will be tackling bad habits that put drivers’ lives in danger.

Starting Wednesday, forces around the province including the Prince Albert Police Service will be looking for people not wearing seatbelts or using their phone to talk or text.

Here in Prince Albert, the service will be using roving patrols and check stops to ensure city roadways will be as safe as possible.

Sgt. Kelly McLean with the service said it is growing problem across the province that continues to claim lives despite continuous education.

Last year, failing to wear seatbelts resulted in 920 injuries and 70 deaths.

Distracted driving, which includes cellphone use resulted in more than 8,800 injuries and 50 deaths.
That’s too many injuries and deaths that could be easily avoided, said McLean.

“Public are reminded to use their seatbelts and not use electronic communication devices while driving,” he said.

“Turn your attention to the road and help reduce injuries and fatalities on Saskatchewan’s highways.”
