Lac La Ronge Indian Band seeks residential school status for Timber Bay

Sep 21, 2011 | 4:21 PM

A meeting was held this morning to discuss Timber Bay Children's Home's application for residential school status.

The northern Saskatchewan school was originally left off the list because it is not affiliated with the Catholic of Anglican churches.

The Lac La Rongue Indian Band sees the matter as a step toward closure.

Their lawyer Michael Swinwood said the application is very important.

“They're standing there and saying 'why not me?',” said Swinwood.

“It's extremely important for former students to be in the position that they can make this kind of application.”

Swinwood maintained that Timber Bay was really no different than any other residential school. If granted status, all the children who went their will become eligible to apply for compensation.

They number more than 2,000.
