U16 En Fuego dig up silver at Provincials

May 2, 2022 | 12:00 PM

The U16 Volleyball Provincials were held in Saskatoon over the weekend and the Prince Albert Optimist Toppers En Fuego smashed their way to second place.

After going 4-0 through round robin play, the team faced the Southeast Vipers Black in the playoffs and won both games (25–23, 25–21).

En Fuego then went on to face Husky Volleyball Club (HVC) Premier in the final, and lost 25–19, 25–15. Coach Tori Glyn said the girls played consistent all weekend.

“And it was nice to see a lot of the things we worked on in practice, come together in the games so we are really proud of them,” she said.

Up next for the team, is Nationals in Edmonton over the May long weekend.

“I think they are excited just because the last two years we haven’t had the opportunity to go so they’ve never been before. We are really hoping it’s a positive experience for them and a chance to see teams we wouldn’t normally play in Saskatchewan,” Glynn said.

The U15 En Fuego team was also in action this past weekend at their respective provincials tournament in Warman. After beating Humboldt in their opening playoffs matchup, they would lose to the Wolfpack in the next round but certainly gave their opponents a tough fight (21–25, 25–16,15–6).

On the men’s side, provincials for the U16, U17 and U18 teams take place this upcoming weekend in Warman and Saskatoon.

The U14 provincials were held in Warman April 23–24.

The Prince Albert Volleyball Club (PAVC) Smashing Bananas Gold took Bronze after a comeback 11–25, 26–24, 15–8 win over the Regina Volleyball Club Green.

The PAVC Smashing Bananas Black squad finished fifth.
