Willemijntje “Wilma” Gerarda Gelysteen, born on August 12, 1929, in the city of Baarn, in the province of Utrecht, Netherlands, the eldest of 7 children, passed away quietly with her two sons by her side on Sunday, February 9, 2025. Wilma was a survivor of the hunger, fear and shock of the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands in May of 1940, until its liberation in May of 1945 by Canadian and allied forces. Oma, Mom, Willma, on April 22, 1954, married Stephanus “Steve” Franciscus Marie Gelysteen, immigrating to Canada as their honeymoon in the same year. She was predeceased by her husband, Steve; her parents, Arnolda and Mathys Vonk; as well as several brothers and sisters in the Netherlands. Wilma is survived by her sister, Heather Van Oostveen of New Zealand; her eldest son, Lawrence (Donna), her granddaughter, Erinn (Jim) Hale and great-grandchildren, Elyssa and Ayker Hale, her granddaughter, Erica (Josh) Miller and great-grandchildren, Paityn and Mason Miller; her youngest son, Tim (Tracy), and her granddaughter, Caitlin Gelysteen. Wilma worked at the Holy Family Hospital in Prince Albert until she was hired for a position in the Central Supplies Department at the Victoria Union Hospital, Prince Albert, a position that she was very proud to retain until her retirement at age 60. Mom very much enjoyed living and fully embraced her retired life, welcoming visitors, sharing with dear friends and delighting in the time spent with her sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. As it is “Oma’s” request for simplicity, there will be no formal celebration, but a private interment will be held at a later date.
