William (Bill) Brahniuk
1924 – 2014
Bill, otherwise known affectionately as “Boss,” was born in Turysyk, Poland on 20 January 1924, the oldest son of Sidor and Marfa. Bill came to Canada in 1935 arriving in Halifax on November 12th. Bill, his parents and two of his three brothers travelled by train to Shellbrook, Saskatchewan and then by wagon to Paddockwood where they built a home, a family and a legacy. Bill was a man of profound integrity and steadfastness. His natural leadership, insight and concern for his community was consistently demonstrated though his selfless service to others. Bill was also known for his sense of humour, although at times he would lift his index finger to let everyone know he was telling a joke. Bill married Mary on 19 November 1955 and together they raised four children: Debbie, Gerald, Rick and Fred. All of their children married and have raised families of their own such that at the time of his passing, Bill had 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. There are many memories of the family’s struggle to homestead in the frontier-like country of Saskatchewan where the community relied upon the strength and values of couples like Bill and Mary. There are many more memories of times around the kitchen table where Bill would engage others in conversations on topics from farming to international politics. Bill was a man who knew the value of time and he spent his life loving his family and investing in others. On Saturday, 27 December, Bill left us having given his all. Bill is survived by his wife Mary, his sister-in-law, and by all his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his mother and father, by his two sisters and three brothers. Bill, Dad, Gedo, Boss we are grateful for your example, we are grateful for your sacrifices on our behalf, we miss you, we love you, go with God. Thank you to all who sent condolences, and provided support in the form of flowers and food. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray’s Funeral Chapel, (306-922-4729).
