Violet "Vi" Konias

At age 91, our mom, grandma, and great grandma, Violet “Vi” Konias, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on a morning that felt very much like her— quiet, calm and gentle. She is now reunited with her beloved husband of 71 years, Joe, the love of her life. Vi leaves behind her children, Cindy (Carl) Moslenko, Peggy (Bob) Burke, Kim (Wynne) Konias, and Tammy (Rich) Phaneuf, along with 10 married grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, who were the pride and joy of her life. She will be missed immensely by all of us, as well as her sister and brother-in-law Mary and John Panchuk, and her many other relatives and friends.
Vi was beautiful, inside and out, and the heart of our family. Truly, she was everything to us.
Vi was generous beyond words, insistent on putting others first. She loved nothing more than to give, whether sharing vegetables from her garden, apples from their bountiful trees, her handpicked blueberries, or freshly caught fish.
We were the beneficiaries of the countless hours she happily spent in the sunny outdoors.
Vi’s strength, and pride of purpose, resulted from a lifetime of hard work. From immigrating to Canada from Ukraine with her family at age 4, to growing up on the family farm, to working in service to age 85 (and still then reluctant to retire), Vi was resilient, dependable, and unafraid to roll up her sleeves. Those values stayed with her always, and her family, friends and colleagues reaped the benefits.
A manager and waitress by day, Vi was hard pressed to turn off those qualities at home. Known for her professionalism, welcomeness, and attention to detail, Vi could have a tray of sausage or dainties (homemade of course) set out before you had your shoes off, with a real knack for convincing you you were hungry.
Filled with flowers (including her beloved African Violets), trinkets from a lifetime of collecting, and the smell of home cooking, Vi’s home was the cornerstone of most family gatherings. Her exceptional hospitality brought everyone together, making each visit feel like a special occasion with lasting memories.
Vi was vibrant and elegant. We have lovely memories of her on the dance floor two stepping with Joe or twirling with her brother Nick. She laughed big and often, and you could not help but laugh along with her.
When it came to being a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Vi was in a category all her own. You knew you could always count on her for advice, reassurance, or just someone to listen. A story told or news shared was often met with a sweet and simple “honest?”, encouraging you to tell her more. She had a mother’s instinct like no other and could hear it in your voice if something was wrong. Every time, she would step in with comfort, wisdom, and love. The littles gravitated towards her, with her sing-songing, snuggles and hand clapping. Regardless of age, we all understood Vi’s immense effort to make you feel special and loved. Like flying cross-country (with a fear of flying) to spend time with family, a carryon of homemade perogies in tow. Or being the last to sit down or eat, needing to ensure everyone else was taken care of first. Or sneaking cash into your pocket when the parents weren’t looking (or not caring if they were).
Family meant everything to Vi. Her relationship with Joe was a true partnership, and a beautiful example of lasting love between sweethearts. Vi cherished togetherness above all else, gluing the family together with kindness and generosity. If the way to the heart is through the stomach, Vi found her way in spades.
For nearly six decades in Prince Albert, and later Diamond House in Warman, Vi built friendships wherever she went; touching the lives of neighbors, friends and staff alike with her kindness, wit, and gentle spirit. We cannot thank the staff at Diamond House enough for their care, love and companionship for mom, especially in the difficult months following dad’s passing. She no longer has to wonder – “Where the hell is Joe”.
We are endlessly grateful for the life Vi lived and love she gave so freely. While our hearts are heavy with her loss, we find comfort in knowing she is with Joe again, watching over us like she always has.
Rest peacefully, Mom. Your love, grace and quiet strength will live forever in our hearts, and your memory will always be cherished. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
