Mom passed away peacefully on December 24, 2011 with family at her side. She was residing at the Herb Bassett Home in Prince Albert, SK. She was born in Caribou, MN U.S.A. and at the age of four immigrated with her family to settle in the Strongpine District. Mom worked on the family farm until July 1948 when she married Harry Toporowski and moved to the farm at Paddockwood.
She is survived by five step-children Alex (Marion) and children Jacque (Jeff), Conne (Chris) and Kym; Jane; Nick (Jenny) and children Sandi (Rod), Terry, Barb (Dean), Darren (Shannon) and Nicole; Stan (Delores) and children Jim (Mel), Debbie, Ted (Leanne); and Helen (Mike) Maruschak and children Cathy (Robin) and Duane (Connie) and one daughter Diane (Wayne) Sumners and children Scott (Leanne), Wade (Rona) and Trent (Cathie). She is also survived by her son-in-law Bill Heleta and children Val, Calvin (Edna) and Trudie and 30 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers Joe (Dorothy) Weleski of Prince Albert, Walter (Louise) of Spirit River, AB and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Harry in 1989; two daughters Patricia in 1970 and Chris Heleta in 2008; and one grandson Bobby Maruschak in 1988. She was also predeceased by her parents Nick and Florence Weleski; her sisters Mary Sokoliuk, Katie Pidborochynski, Alice Mischuk, Olga Dorian, Rose Sloan and Anne Weleski; and one brother John Weleski.
Mom worked hard on the farm all her life and was always happy visiting with family and friends. Her home was always open to relatives and friends and no one left hungry. She enjoyed her garden, playing cards and bingo, seniors group and travelling when the opportunity presented itself. She was well-known for her buns, cabbage rolls, perogies, pies, pickles canned fruit and many other home-made goodies. When visiting Baba you always took home a care package.
She especially enjoyed spending time with her family. She lived in Paddockwood in her own home until 2005 when she moved to Northcote Manor for five years, then Golden Hill Care Home. In January of 2011 she suffered a stroke and was hospitalized until September when she moved to the Herb Bassett Home. Our sincere thank you to the staff for their compassionate care. We will miss her terribly.
Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at Gray’s Funeral Chapel, 575 – 28th Street West, Prince Albert, SK with Margaret Ferchuk officiating. Interment will be held at Paddockwood Cemetery. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to the Victoria Hospital Foundation, 1200 – 24th Street West, Prince Albert, SK S6V 5T4.
