Victoria Skibicki
1936 ~ 2023
It is with heavy hearts and great sorrow that the family of Victoria Skibicki announce her sudden, peaceful passing at the age of 86 years, at the Victoria Hospital, in Prince Albert, SK.
Mom was born on Dec 2, 1936, in the district of Lepine, SK, to George and Alexandra (née Bayer) Olexyn. She attended Bukovina School completing grade 8. Mom left school to stay home and care for her ill mother Alexandra. She also helped on the family farm in the Lepine district.
As a young lady, Mom was very quiet and shy. However, she became adventurous and moved to the big city of Prince Albert. Mom worked at the Holy Family Hospital as a kitchen aid. It was during her adventures in Prince Albert that mom met the love of her life, our dad, Stanley Skibicki. They met at a dance at the French-Canadian Hall in Prince Albert in 1956, and they were married on July 12, 1958. Together for over 61 years, mom and dad operated a grain and livestock farm, which evolved into a largescale grain farm in the Whitestar/Cloverdale district.
With a Ukrainian upbringing, mom worked very hard on the farm. From milking 12 cows twice a day by hand to raising pigs and hundreds of chickens, not to mention her three 5-acre gardens, mom loved working the soil to see the fruits of her labour. Every year she filled her four large deepfreezes with a bounteous harvest. Mom was an avid berry picker. She picked blueberries, saskatoons, raspberries and high bush cranberries and made various preserves.
Mom’s cabbage rolls, perogies, borsch and headcheese had no written recipe, but were so delicious every time. Even after mom’s farming accident losing several fingers on both hands, she continued to make dozens and dozens of cabbage rolls and perogies. Mom loved to bake. She made everything from homemade braided bread to her favorite dainties. No one ever left mom’s home hungry. She always made sure you ate a huge meal and a care package to go! Family time and special holiday celebrations were treasured by mom. Getting together for family events brought mom much happiness. Her family was important to her. She loved us all unconditionally and was always there for us, helping in any way she could. She cherished her three grandchildren, Mark, Brittany and Brody and was very proud of each of them. She loved attending their school and extra curricular activities and really treasured Brittany’s Ukrainian dancing and travelling to Ukrainian Dance Festivals.
On May 29,2020, mom’s life changed when she lost the love of her life, our dad, Stanley. She missed him so much and now, mom and dad are reunited together forever.
Mom’s care and compassion for her family will always be treasured. We will miss you mom and we love you. Vichnaya Pamyat (memory eternal)
Victoria will be lovingly remembered by her children, Larry (Jeannette, David Pinay); Theresa; Shelley (Randy Krammer); and Dale (Corrie); her grandchildren, Mark Krammer, Brittany Krammer, and Brody Skibicki; her sisters-in-law, Elsie Olexyn, Sylvia Olexyn; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Victoria was predeceased by her loving husband, Stanley of 61 years; her parents, George and Alexandra (née Bayer) Olexyn; her 5 infant brothers; brothers, William, Peter and Alex; her sister, Doris Balon; her brother-in-law, Bill Balon; along with numerous uncles, aunties cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the medical teams on level 6 at Victoria Hospital for the care given to mom during her final days.
