Velma grew up on the family farm in the Holbein area. Velma tried to play various sports with her friend Shirley Marud when she wasn’t milking cows and working on the farm. Velma and Shirley grew up together and played softball and went to the odd party as to where they met their future spouses.
Velma married Eric Sommerfeld in 1956 and moved to Rich Valley. Velma and Eric had their first son, Grant. Gord was born in 1959.They sold the farm in Rich Valley and bought a half section from Eric’s parents in 1959. Brenda was born in 1962. Velma was involved in the mixed farming business. Velma did a large amount of processing garden products, driving grain truck, milking cows, tending sheep and butchering chickens. Velma would spend hours knitting sweaters from raw wool and cutting hair and giving perms to the neighbors.
As the children grew older, they became involved in sports. Velma was involved in fundraising, cheering, driving to the ball games. Velma liked being a part of the boy’s minor hockey and managing the rink canteen for the old and new rink. Velma was on the minor sports executive for years organizing and fundraising.
Velma enjoyed gardening, canning, playing cards with the Posty’s, playing guitar and singing with the grandchildren. Velma looked after the grandchildren whenever needed. Velma always was rooting for the underdog and took pride in helping other family members when in dire needs.
Velma stayed on the farm and never ventured far from the kitchen table in her later years as the surrounding neighbors would gather for their mid morning coffee. Velma spent the last few years in long term care in Shellbrook. She enjoyed the visits from everyone that dared to break that crust to visit with her.
