TILLIE “TATIANA” KAWULA
1912 – 2010
Tillie “Tatiana” Kawula passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Nursing Home in Saskatoon at the age of 98 years. Tillie came to Canada from Ukraine in 1929. She married her husband Joe in 1935 and remained in Prince Albert until moving to Saskatoon in 2002. In 1942 Tillie and Joe started a boarding house, “Rose's Rooms”, which was a home for many people until the early 50's. She continued to have long-term boarders in her home until she moved to Saskatoon. These people were very much a part of the Kawula family. Tillie was a wonderful example of volunteerism. She was a frequent visitor of the hospitals and residents of Mont St. Joseph's Nursing Home and North Park Centre. Some of the organizations that Tillie supported over the years included the Holy Family Hospital Auxiliary, Mont St. Joseph's Auxiliary, The Cancer Society, The Polish Cultural Society, The Prince Albert Historical Society, The Kinsmen School, The CNIB and the Horticultural Society. She was an active member of the Red Cross, which recognized her for donating over 50 pints of blood. For over 60 years she was an active member of the Catholic Women's League in Prince Albert. She hosted many charitable teas and craft sales at her home. Tillie was named Prince Albert's Citizen of the year in 1965. Her many friends organized a fundraising drive and established a Joe and Tillie Community Scholarship to be presented annually to a student who is involved in community service. Tillie was predeceased by her husband Joe in 1993; her parents Mr. and Mrs. Welykij; her brother John (Anne) Welykij; her sister Anna (William) Myssyk; her granddaughter Mary Gabriel Redekopp. She is survived by her children Helen (Tom Redekopp) and their children Dan and Chris, Walter (Linda) and their children Kim, Karyn, Kathy and Kelly, Frank (Audry) and their children Joe and David as well as numerous great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces. The family wishes to thank the staff and Sisters at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Home in Saskatoon for their kind and loving care of Tillie over the past 8-½ years. Prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, October 22 at Our Lady of Czestochowa – 160 – 12th Street East. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 23 at Sacred Heart Cathedral – 1401 – 4th Avenue West by Father Janusz Bizewski. Interment will take place in the Garden of Sermon on the Mount, Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph's Ukrainian Nursing Home, Saskatoon or a charity of the donor's choice.
