Thomas Graham
1938 ~ 2026
Thomas (Tom) Graham, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at the Rose Garden Hospice, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and entered his eternal heavenly home on April 23rd with his wife Mary Jane by his side.
Born and raised in Prince Albert, Tom loved playing hockey as a child and would be out on the rink any chance he had. He was an exceptional athlete, excelling at hockey and baseball. He was a fabulous pitcher, batter (525 average!) and was often positioned as back-catcher as well. He grew up playing hockey with his line mates Ron Primeau and Dewey Merrett and played junior hockey with many notable players like Dave Balon, Jim Neilson, Orland Kurtenbach, and Bill Hicke. Had it not been for a certain young woman in his life at the time, he may have very well gone off to become one of the early NHL hockey players himself! He also enjoyed watching his beloved Toronto Blue Jays and many tennis tournaments.
Tom grew up attending the Prince Albert Covenant Church, Sunday School, Youth Group, Bible Studies, and sang and travelled with the Covenant Bible School Choir. He was Building Committee Chairman for the construction of the present Gateway Covenant Church.
Music was an important part of Tom’s and his family’s lives. In their younger years, Tom, his sister Jean (accordion) and brother Walter (trombone) performed as a trio at church on a regular basis. He played the trumpet in the city band for many years alongside his father Walter on the trombone, his brother Walter on the percussion and trombone and his uncle Jim on the euphonium. He also played trumpet with the Salvation Army Band for several years and was incredibly moved by music. He felt an immense connection listening to it and was gifted with a wonderful bass singing voice.
Working in the City Tax Department for 17 years, Tom completed a three-year correspondence course from Queen’s University becoming the first certified tax assessor in Prince Albert. In 1975, he changed careers and became the SHA Director of housekeeping at the Victoria Union Hospital, serving in that position for 24 years. He treasured his staff and was always concerned about their well-being.
Tom’s hobbies included cars, both owning 57 of them and working on them, feeding birds, playing cards, and most of all, spending time with his four daughters, grandkids and great grandkids. There was always time for coffee and a visit with family and friends, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He was the most kind, hardworking and fun-loving man who enjoyed life most when he could rouse a smile and a laugh at one of his jokes or a silly gesture.
Tom had an innate sense of knowing when someone was in need and would promptly act on it. Extra dinner guests were a normal occurrence at our dinner table as well as additional passengers in our vehicle for rides here or there. He enjoyed helping with monetary gifts to see someone through or to fulfill a wish, and to celebrate a birthday with a phone call. He enjoyed breakfasts at Ricky’s Restaurant and knew all the staff by name and enjoyed tipping his waitresses and waiters very well. All these opportunities to help others filled him with joy!
Tom and Mary Jane would make a point to call and visit childhood friends and distant family members when on road trips, and Tom kept in touch even into his last days. There were driving vacations throughout North America, annual visits to British Columbia and Northern Ontario, all adding significant mileage to each vehicle. He also treasured family trips to Barbados, Mexico, Scotland, England, Hawaii, and more.
Tom was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Iona Graham in 1989 and 1990 respectively.
Tom is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; his brother, Walter (Florence, Tyrone); his sister, Jean (Elvin, Brent, Mitchell, Tommy); his daughters, Melody, Alecia, Lois (Rob), Tammy (Garnet); his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Darcie (Kent, Monroe, Townes), Scott (Shana), Cameron (Kristen, Brooklyn, Aria, Benjamin, Theodore), Sean (Keaton, Archer), Marcus (Alice, Hiro, Estelle, Artie), Thomas (Kristen, Jaxon, Avery, Aurora, Lily), Sarah (Ian, Mila, Quinn), Molly (Brett, Austin, Charlie, Daisy), Emily (Graham, Nora), Michael (Briana), Jacob (Hannah), Andrew (Molly), Rachel (Scott). We will forever hold him in our hearts and cherish his legacy of love and laughter.
