Thomas George Galloway was born on November 18, 1947, to Alice and Clifford Galloway Sr. Dad spent his childhood growing up on the farm in Wild Rose and later Prince Albert, graduating from high school in 1966. Dad then went on to obtain his journeyman certificate as an electrician, a trade which he worked at off and on for many years. During that time, Dad also met our mom, Judy Strube and they were married on July 6, 1968.
Mom and Dad started farming around 1970 with our grandparents, Art and Karin Strube. That same year their first daughter Rhonda was born, and in 1972 along came Shannyn. In 1974 Dad had the opportunity to purchase the Ben Emily land in the Marchant Grove district and there he began his farming career on his own. He built all the facilities from the ground up to run a herd of cows and slowly began to rent more land, all the time picking up good jobs off the farm twisting wires. One job he was the proudest of was when the new rink in Canwood was built. Dad did the majority of the electrical work, and this building continues to be used in the community to this day. In 1976 Thomas Scott was born and this completed the family. Mixed farming continued to be the way of life for our family, with both mom and dad working off the farm at times to make it work. Growing up, Dad taught us so many things about rural life that we still cherish today.
In 1995 at the age of 48, Dad was looking to create some bigger off-farm income, and thus began our lives in the trucking industry. The first logging truck was purchased, the cows were sold, and we were Alberta bound on an adventure that would last 18 years. The first winters were spent in Grassland, then Boyle and finally Fort McMurray. Those were some great years for Dad in so many ways. Dad and I continued to expand the business until 2013 when we decided 13 trucks were a bit of a racket and Dad stated the farm life was calling his name again. Trucking allowed dad to be able to build the pride of his life on the farm. In 2008 “THE SHOP” was built, and guess who did all the wiring…
By 2016 the trucking company had decreased to 3 trucks, all of which had been purchased new and are still in use every day on the farm. Dad was a farmer at heart, and it was his true passion. Over the last few years, the farm has grown, and Dad was able to live the rest of his years doing what he wanted to do. Dad didn’t have a lot of hobbies, but he greatly enjoyed watching his grandchildren play hockey and ball and seeing them all grow up to be the young adults they have become. He was also blessed with a great grandson Owen in 2023. His last hobby was when, at the age of 75, he bought and learned how to fly his own drone so he could not only check the crops from the road but from the air as well. And if all else failed we could always find him down at the shop tinkering with something that neither the boys nor I were interested in fixing!
Dad passed away on the farm with family by his side, work clothes and a John Deere hat on, ready for another day. Thank you for everything Dad. It was quite a journey, and we will check crops together again someday.
