Theodore “Ted” KULYK
1930 – 2016
Ted was born on January 24, 1930 at the family homestead farmhouse in the St. Julien district and passed away at the St. Joseph’s home in Saskatoon on February 14, 2016 after a short illness. He was the youngest son of six children born to Mike and Dora Kulyk. Ted is survived by his two sons Wayne (Sheryl) of Warman SK. and Glenn (Kolleen) of Duluth, Minnesota U S A and two grandsons Landon and Lucas of Grande Cache AB. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Margaret (Elmer) Malec, Gladys Kulyk and Doris Dickie of Prince Albert; brothers-in-law Raymond (Roberta) Dickie of Moose Jaw and Robert (Edie) Dickie of Nanaimo, BC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ted was predeceased by his parents Mike and Dora Kulyk; his wife Mary of 57 years; sisters Mary, Ann, Kay and brothers Paul and Dymtro. Ted was a long time teacher in the Prince Albert District for many years teaching at Magnolia District School, Whitley District School, West Central District School then Central School, Prince Edward, Vincent Massey and King George Schools in Prince Albert. Later after retirement he went on to teach adult education classes at the Natonum College and SIAST College in Prince Albert. Ted loved to dazzle you with mathematical equations and went to great lengths to explain how he would arrive at the correct answer. He often said he got his fascination with mathematical deciphering from his old former teacher Peter “Gun” Kindrachuk who also taught Ted’s two sons at Riverside Collegiate. Ted also had a great appreciation for the great outdoors and nature in general and took pride in knowing every animal’s particular habits and traits. He was also very adept at identifying birds and their songs and enjoyed building bird houses and feeding birds in his backyard, a trait he passed on to his sons. Ted’s true passion though was to continue to operate the family homestead farm which he did from 1970 to 2010 where he spent countless hours making sure equipment on the farm was ready to go and things were operating smoothly when needed. He kept his vehicles and equipment in top notch condition and was very conscientious in his obsession to fine detail of mechanical things which he also passed onto his sons. Ted enjoyed taking family vacations often by motor home and trailering around western Canada particularly to the National Parks. He also looked forward to driving or flying to the US to visit his son Glenn in Minnesota and truly found the Great Lakes area fascinating. Ted was also a great fan of Old Time Fiddle Music and contests attending various events throughout Western Canada with neighbours and friends. He also had a great appreciation for Ukrainian music and the history that accompanied it. The appreciation of this music was also shared by their neighbors who often got together for local jam sessions in each others basements. As a grandfather he was an avid mentor and proud to support his two grandsons while playing hockey and soccer at various tournaments throughout the province. He was also very happy when his two grandsons lived with “Baba and Gida” while attending SIAST College in PA. After his wife Mary passed away in 2011 Ted continued to live in the home they knew for the past 45 years on Fraser Place maintaining the house and yard until he was hospitalized with his illness and finally residing in the St. Joseph’s home in Saskatoon where he resided from October 2015 until his passing. The family wishes to thank the Doctors and Nursing Staff at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert and the Doctors and Nursing Staff at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon and in particular the excellent care provided to him by the Sisters, Nursing Staff and Home Care Workers while residing at the St. Joseph’s Home. The care given at the St. Joseph’s Home was second to none and much appreciated by the family. A private family funeral service will be held at Gray’s Funeral Chapel on February 20, 2016. Interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to a charity of donor’s choice. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca . Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray’s Funeral Chapel, (306-922-4729).
