After a courageous struggle with cancer, Terry Schausitz passed away early in the morning of June 18, 2011.
Terry Ann Dagg was born on October 7, 1948 in Arborfield, SK to Eileen and Stan Dagg. She was their second daughter, a little sister to Beverley. Terry was always full of energy and curious about life. She was also a fighter. When she was 6, she contracted polio and had to learn to walk again, a goal she achieved with characteristic vigour. When she was able to walk again, she began attending one-room schools where her Mom was teaching. Grades 1 – 3 were at Addington 3 miles north of town and grades 4 -5 in Jordan River. When Terry was 8, Eileen married William Norby, with whom Terry shared a love of baking. After living briefly in Arborfield, the family, which now included baby sister Laurie, moved two and a half miles north of town. The farm was a wonderful place to grow up with kittens to play with, bicycles to ride and Elvis records to play.
After graduating from Arborfield High School in 1967, Terry attended SIAST where she received her Journeyman cooking ticket, a credential that helped her find many interesting jobs over the years. In 1969 she married Steve Schausitz, an electrician whose work took them from Saskatoon to Thompson, back to Saskatoon, and finally to Fort McMurray. They had two sons: Steven born in 1970 and Robert in 1976. After she and Steve parted ways, she met Brian Ritchie, her partner, friend and love for the past twenty-four years. In 2003 Terry and Brian moved to Saskatoon, and in 2007 to Melfort.
Terry had a zest for life and had fun whatever she was doing. She enjoyed her various cooking jobs for the work and for the friends she would meet there. She particularly enjoyed her final work with the Melfort Health District. At different stages in her life, she took in boarders, often helping out people who might be having a tough time. Everyone had a story and she was interested in hearing them all. She also enjoyed high school sports, summers swimming and helping with swimming lessons at the park. In Fort McMurray she curled regularly. She walked everywhere, always needing to get out of the house even on the dreariest days. In Melfort she and Brian acquired a dog named Buddy who helped make walks especially fun.
Although Terry liked being at home, when she traveled it was with curiosity and a great interest in the people she met. In Hungary she was thrilled to eat cherries off the tree, in Texas to meet locals, and in Hawaii to see the fresh food markets and to swim in the ocean.
In autumn 2009 she discovered she had cancer. She fought it as rigourously as she could, staying positive until the end. She will be greatly missed by everyone who was lucky enough to be a part of her life.
Predeceased by her father Stan, step-father William, grandparents Andrew and Mary Dagg and Dave and Ethel Bryden, cousin Bill Bryden, and many loved aunts and uncles, she is survived by her partner Brian, mother Eileen, sons Steven (Shannon Cornelius) Schausitz, and Robert Schausitz, granddaughters Alysa, Courtney, Bailey, and Meagan, sisters Beverley (John) Sexsmith, Laureen (Rob) Sumner, aunt Betty (Frank) Kapeller, and numerous cousins, nephews, great nephews and great nieces.
The Funeral Service for Terry was held at St. Lucy's Catholic Church on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.
