It is with deep and profound sadness the family of Sylvia Joyce Lowe announce her passing to her heavenly home on January 6, 2024.
Sylvia was born on September 29, 1950 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. She grew up on a farm by Foxford, Saskatchewan.
Sylvia married the love of her life, Ken, in 1971. The other loves of her life were her daughter, Cheryne and son, Kory. Life was truly complete for her when her granddaughters Nevaeh and Kaylee and grandson Harley came into her life. In retirement Sylvia and Ken loved to travel and spent most winters in Morro Bay, California which became their second home. There were also trips to the UK, Alaska, Italy, Spain, Czech Republic, Guatemala and Hawaii.
Sylvia was a passionate spectator of figure skating with Cheryne, and hockey and baseball with Kory. She spent a lot of time driving us to early morning practices, weekend competitions and tournaments. She was our biggest fan and felt every victory and fall with us. Every sequin she sewed on at midnight and piece of hockey equipment she washed was done with pure love.
One of Sylvia’s early life dreams was to become a nurse but raising her family became her priority and the thought of shift work deterred her. Another dream was that she wanted to be a famous singer as a child, but as she put it, “I soon came to the realization that the ability to carry a tune did not constitute great talent”.
Sylvia had a very successful career. She moved her way up at the Royal bank but being offered the first mortgage specialist job in Saskatoon at Investors Group, where she spent the last 13 years of her career, was by far the highlight.
After retiring permanently to Candle Lake, Sylvia enjoyed countless hours on the golf course, creating many new friendships and becoming an actively supportive member of the fun-loving local golf community. She cherished every golf game and social function with her late husband Ken and with numerous members of The Ladies group.
Sylvia was blessed with many special friends whom she acquired and lovingly fostered throughout her lifetime. They became like family providing much joy, companionship, and mutual support. She treasured each long walk, late night talk, lazy afternoons at Candle Lake and trips to Vancouver, Hawaii, Quebec City and Mesa.
Her commitment to the Candle Lake community also included several years as a dedicated volunteer and board member of Communities in Bloom. She and Ken took special pride in the impressive playground installation at Waskateena Beach.
Sylvia enjoyed showing her love with her food. She spent many hours in the kitchen, especially at Christmas and when family came to visit. Making countless sugar cookies for her children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren is something we will all hold close in our hearts. These are family favorites at Christmas together with cabbage rolls, meatballs, lefsa and so much more. Sylvia, however, was best known for her annual poppy cock deliveries at Christmas which warmed the hearts of all her friends and family.
Her family was always first in her life and she treasured the time spent with them. Sylvia’s exceptional patience, listening skills and caring personality made her the best wife, mother, baba, sister and aunt anyone could ask for. Sylvia loved playing with her grandchildren and taking them to the beach at Candle Lake.
Sylvia is survived by her daughter Cheryne (Craig Haavardsrud), son Kory (Edith Savanya), granddaughters Nevaeh and Kaylee and grandson Harley. She is also survived by her brother Kelly Poltorak (Coralee), brother-in-law George Lowe (Marg), sister-in-law Isobel Horudko and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents William and Anne Poltorak, her brother David Poltorak, her sister Dianne Poltorak, her in- laws Walter and Joyce Lowe and brother-in-law Ernie Horudko.
A special thank you to the ICU and surgical teams at the Royal University Hospital that did their all. A special thank you to all of her wonderful friends and family for the support given during this time.
A celebration of life will be held in Candle Lake in summer 2024.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Canadian Cancer Society or The Heart and Stroke Foundation.
We will love and miss you forever Mom, you will always remain in our hearts.
