January 7, 1940 – April 11, 2024
Sylvia was born in Prince Albert, SK on January 7, 1940. She attended school at Mons, David and Meath Park, graduating in 1958. She then went on to Teachers College in Saskatoon, SK. She started her teaching career in Prince Albert, spending several years at St. Anne’s School.
In 1965 she married Terry Jones at St. Joseph’s RC Church in Prince Albert. They moved to Camrose, Alberta where Terry was working in a jewelry store. Soon after an opportunity arose and they bought Laycock’s Jewelry in Shellbrook, turning it into Terry’s Diamond House. Sylvia resumed her teaching career and continued teaching in Shellbrook until she retired in 1990. Sylvia was a community minded person who was a willing volunteer in many areas such as the Kinette Club, the golf club, the STS local chapter, the Arts Council, and St. Agatha’s Roman Catholic Church. Sylvia enjoyed painting, she did pottery, gardened and golfed for entertainment. She also enjoyed camping and in their early years, Sylvia and Terry did several biking / camping trips with one of them being across P.E.I. Sylvia also enjoyed travelling and she and Terry travelled extensively to the U.S. and Europe. Sylvia also took her aged mother on the trip of a lifetime to Hawaii. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Shellbrook Hospital for the excellent and compassionate care Sylvia received while in the hospital. Small town hospitals are truly special.
Sylvia was survived by her sister: Marlene (Ed) Stoyko; her brother: Ernie (Linda) Jaman; her brother-in-law: Ivor Jones (Janis); her sister-in-law: Gwynnedde Mikkelborg; her nieces and nephews: Louise (Scott) Melbye, Kris Mikkelborg,
Eric (Karen) Mikkelborg, Trevor (Melanie) Jones, Meghan Jones, Pat (Angela) Stoyko, Chris (Miranda) Stoyko, Curtis (Jessica) Jaman, and Erin (Darren) Rodger; as well as numerous great nieces/nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Sylvia is predeceased by her husband: Terry Jones; her parents: Peter and Ann Jaman; her infant brother: Thomas; her brother-in-law: Charles Mikkelborg; her maternal grandparents: Thomas and Mary Truba; her paternal grandparents: and Alex and Dora Jaman.
The Funeral Mass for Sylvia will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Agatha’s RC Church in Shellbrook with Father Tuan Doan officiating. Sylvia will be laid to rest in the Shellbrook Cemetery. In lieu of tributes, memorial donations may be made in memory of Sylvia to either the St. Agatha’s Roman Catholic Church or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
