Sister Estelle Lavigne
1938 ~ 2024
Sister Estelle Lavigne (Jean-de-la-Croix) was born on December 8, 1938, in Edam, Saskatchewan. She grew up in Jackfish, SK, and attended Lavigne School for her elementary grades. She then began her secondary education at the Child Jesus Convent in North Battleford and completed it with the Sisters of the Presentation in Spiritwood. Upon graduating, she joined the Order of the Presentation and did her Novitiate in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec. Except for her years of religious and professional training, and a sabbatical year in Rome, Sr. Estelle was a classroom teacher since 1959. She gave ample proof of her capacity to adapt to the youth at all levels from K to 12. After retiring from teaching, she did First Nations Ministry both around North Battleford and in Whitefish, a work she enjoyed very much. She was then asked to work as the Diocesan Catechetics Coordinator in Prince Albert, and as Parish Life Director at John Bosco Parish in Saskatoon. When her health started failing Sr. Estelle moved to the Sisters’ Care Home in 2017 and later to Mont St. Joseph in 2021. We will remember Sr. Estelle as a true French Canadian, a staunch supporter of bilingualism, sparing no effort to promote her native language. We thank her for her deep faith, her love for the Blessed Virgin Mary and her sincerity in the service of God.
The Funeral Mass for Sr. Estelle will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, December 23, 2024, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 1401 4th Ave West, in Prince Albert, SK, with Most Reverend Stephen Hero, Bishop of Prince Albert, officiating. Interment to follow at South Hill Cemetery. Online condolences may be left at https://www.arbormemorial.ca/en/riverpark/obituaries/sr-estelle-lavigne/134113.html . Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of River Park Funeral Home, (306) 764-2727, Colette Harnett, Funeral Director.
