Shannon Crane
1949 ~ 2024
It is with profound sadness the family announces the sudden passing of Shannon Gertrude Crane (née Herdin) on November 17, 2024. Shannon had been ill at home for several days prior to being admitted to hospital on November 10, after a devastating fall at home.
Shannon was a loving and loyal daughter, sibling, mother, grandmother, partner and friend. Her lust for life was evident in singing, dancing or conversation. Shannon was born in Prince Albert, SK, to Anton Leo Herdin and Gertrude Julianna (née Kallio) Herdin. She joined siblings Annetta and Terry on the family farm in Lone Spruce. We were later joined by our sister Juliette. Life in the country provided opportunities and challenges. Shannon helped with chores as required such as drying dishes or getting cows to the barn for milking. Fun was had picking berries, playing games, visiting relatives and spending time at the lake.
Shannon attended the one room Deer Ridge Elementary School. When it closed Shannon and her siblings attended Wild Rose Central which had Grades 1 to 12.
Shannon was 10 years of age when our father passed away from a heart attack in December,1959. Our family remained on the farm with assistance from family and friends. Eventually Shannon’s mom renewed her teacher’s certification, and obtained employment in Prince Albert. Shannon along with her brother and sister made the move in 1966.Shannon completed high school at St. Mary’s High School. Her studies there included Home Economics. Shannon learned to sew and for some time after made many of her outfits. She was creative and artistic. She enjoyed shopping for clothes and shoes. In later years her manicures reflected her fun side and joy in fashion.
Shannon attended Saskatoon Teachers College for a year after graduation. She spent the following year at the University of Saskatchewan and obtained her teacher’s certification. Her first job was teaching at Wild Rose where several students were younger relatives. Shannon met William “Bill” Crane while attending U of S. He was also from Prince Albert and played guitar in a local band. They fell in love and married on August 24, 1968. Bill obtained work at the pulp mill in Prince Albert, and Shannon continued her teaching career. They rode motorcycles and took judo classes in those early years. They also bought a 1967 Pontiac Firebird convertible that brought enjoyment to them.
Their family grew with the birth of Antony in 1979, Ehryn in 1980, and Sanna in 1985. Shannon was so proud of her children. She doted on them, loved them and encouraged them in their endeavours. A huge change came when Bill accepted a transfer with Weyrhasauer to Tacoma, Washington in 1987. Shannon accepted and made the best of this challenge. She had been a mainstay in the life of her mom for many years as her siblings lived out of province.
After three years away, the family decided to return to Saskatchewan. In 1990 they bought a beautiful home on acreage in Meath Park and settled in to the peace and quiet of rural Sask. Shannon returned to her teaching career while supporting her children and Bill in their endeavours. Once again, she was there to support her mom with visits, phone calls, dinners and shopping.
The passing of her mom in May,1996 brought more change. Shannon and Bill separated and divorced some time later. In 1997 Shannon met Kevin Dawson. They bonded at once. They loved and supported one another through the good times and the not so good.
Shannon’s career in Education spanned more than 50 years. She taught adult education at several local First Nation locations. She was employed at Riverbend for many years. Her most recent employment was as a facilitator of a program designed for teenagers with addiction issues. She cared deeply and wanted the best for them.
Most of all Shannon was fiercely proud of and dedicated to her family. She loved all of us so much. Shannon was loved in return. She will be missed.
Shannon is survived by her children, Antony, Ehryn and his spouse Ashley, Sanna and her partner Justin; as well as her precious grandchildren, Ava, Jaxon, Merrick, and Vyla. She is also survived by her siblings, Annetta, Terry and Juliette; and by her loving companion, Kevin. Shannon was predeceased by her parents; grandparents; former spouse, Bill; in-laws; and her nephews, Greg and Grant; and other family members and friends.
Thank you to the Doctors, Nurses and other caregivers who cared for Shannon during her time in hospital.
