Russel Holomichek
January 11, 1933 – February 5, 2011
Russel Holomichek passed away unexpected from heart failure on Saturday, February 5th early in the afternoon at the age of 78 years. He is survived by his pet companion, Woody the dog; four daughters RoseMarie (Bob) Thompson, Debbie (Paul) Goota, BettyLynn (Darren) Mueller and Chrissy/Pat Berger (friend John Bunker); grandchildren Morgan (Barb) Thompson, Crystal (Brian) MacDonald, Danielle Thompson (fiancé James Fraser), Tanner Goota, Russel and Natasha Mueller, Jonas and Sarah Berger; siblings Emily Panas (twin sister), Anne (Albert) Kochanksi, Walter (Sue) Holomiczek, Jane (Victor) Hnidek; great grandchildren; brothers-in-law Roy Gustafson and Ambjorn (Sally) Gustafso and numerous nieces, nephews and kindred friends. He was predeceased by his wife Roberta (2002); his parents Walter and Anne Holomichek and his in-laws Hermina and Wally Gustafson, Walter Panas and Esther and Mike Kozowy. Russel will be missed by all who knew him. He worked hard at a few occupations throughout his life but was mostly a farmer and neighbourhood “fixer” and go-to-guy. He farmed in Henribourg, retired to Christopher Lake, and visited Paddockwood frequently. He worked tirelessly with his wife and daughters at his side to provide a good life for his family. He said, “I want to leave this place a better place than when I came” and made this part of his daily mission. Everyone who knew him would say he made them laugh, through his easy going banter or just making a joke of the situation at hand. He loved talking to people, sharing his stories of his hunting, fishing, trapping, farming, or in the recent years, about the Western shoots, and when possible capturing life’s experience on camera. Russel was a part of many community organizations including The Paddockwood Elks, The Sask Wheat Pool Board, The Spruce Home School Board, The Space Chasers Radio Club, The Lakeland Carnival, Sask100, PA Winterfestival, The Wildlife Federation, the Spruce Home Arena, Search and Rescue, and we are sure there a few we forgot to mention. He loved being busy but always made sure to enjoy life and visit with family and friends. He was an avid reader of history, wildlife and fishing magazines, and country western novels. He was a master gadget guy, tinkering in his shop, decorating his and the kids’ yard and vehicles with the fruits of his labor, and helping his family and friends with whatever broken thing that needed fixing. He was a master recycler of materials and created magic from what other considered junk. He lived his life to the fullest, independent and active until his last breath. He was a passionate man that made use of every minute he was given. He loved unconditionally and stayed true to his wife’s love even after she passed. He wasn’t perfect, nor would he ever claim to be, it’s the flaws that gave him character. We are fortunate for having shared in his life and hope his legacy of a “life well lived” inspires us as we continue on our journey without him to make this a better place to be. Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 pm. on Thursday, February 10, 2011 at St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, 1505 – 13th Street West, Prince Albert, SK. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 11, 2011 at the Paddockwood Elks Hall, Paddockwood, SK with Reverend Father Travis Myrheim officiating. Interment will be held at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to the Prince Albert Elks Club, 93 – 8th Avenue East, Prince Albert, SK S6V 2L2.
