Rosemary Bird
1947 – 2023
On November 1st, 2023, our beautiful mother, kokum, sister, auntie, cousin and friend passed peacefully to the spirit world to be reunited with her father, Tommy Bird, her mother Bertha Sangrey-Bird, her special brother, Fenton Bird and her son, Darin Bird. Rosemary will be remembered for her peaceful presence, her infectious laugh, her love, and acceptance for those who were lost and needed to feel like they had a home and family to love them. Rose’s door was open to anyone who wanted to visit and have a coffee, watch game shows, and hallmark Christmas movies in the summer and talk about her cats, Mooshum and Smokey. Rosemary was content to be at home and receive visitors, stating often how she was never bored in her house.
Although Rose accomplished so much in her life and overcame many obstacles, she was incredibly humble and never spoke of these things but instead spoke of how these accomplishments opened doors for her to give back to people and the community. She was always helping someone; always loving someone who felt unloved, always accepting those who did not feel accepted. She was the champion of the underdog and a collector of wayward souls who came to see her as a mother, kookum, sister and friend.
Rosemary had an adventurous spirit and even a trip to Saskatoon would collect funny stories to be shared later. There was not a day that went by that Rose was not thankful for the people who loved her, the opportunities she had which included receiving degrees in Indigenous Social Work and Human Justice, the people she supported and those who supported her. Rose never took anything for granted from people to places, the home she created for herself and her treasures. Above all else, Rose was a teacher and respected Elder and those who were fortunate enough to hear her speak and learn from her knew what a gift those teachings were. She saw the good in everyone and believed in living life in a good way.
In honour of her wishes, family and friends are invited to attend the wake and funeral to honour her in the way she wanted, with openness, acceptance, love and positivity. It was important to her that her final gathering was one of happiness and love; without hurt or anger. Rose always said, “let it go and forgive”, ‘don’t carry anger” and, in the spirit of her beautiful heart, her final celebration will be filled with laughter, reminiscing about our time with her and sending her home surrounded by the same energy she met us with.
We welcome visitors to share some memories, bring their laughter to send Rose off in a good way to the spirit world. Rosemary’s wake service will be held from November 4th to November 7th, 2023 at the East Hill Hall at 290 23rd Street East, Prince Albert, SK; the Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Gray’s Funeral Chapel, 575, 28th Street West, Prince Albert, SK.
