BECKER – Roman
1938 – 2021
Roman was born on July 24, 1938, in the Sugar Hill District and sadly we announce he passed away on February 4, 2021, at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon at the age of 82 years. He went to school in Sugar Hill and Foxdale. When he was fifteen, he and his father worked in the bush camp cutting poles at Candle Lake for three winters and worked for various farmers in Foxdale in the summer. The family then moved to Montreal Lake to the bush camp there. He met Lavern Schuetz at her parent’s place in Mayview in 1957, and on October 3, 1959, they married. In September of 1961 son, John was born and in June of 1966 daughter, Lorna was born. In 1973 we moved to Birch Hills and lived there for thirty years and worked for farmers and later got on as maintenance for the Town of Birch Hills and worked there for twenty years. In 2001 Roman retired and in 2004 moved to Shellbrook. He loved to garden and harvest it and give away extras. His pride and joy was his Kabota tractor and his Kabota lawnmower. His hobbies were woodworking, watching curling, doing word search puzzles, and helping Lavern cut and sew quilts and rugs. He liked old-time country music and old-time dance music. Roman enjoyed going to garage sales, bike riding, going for walks, sitting on the swing in the gazebo, having coffee, listening to the radio, watching the birds, and of course, having the occasional nap. While sitting on the swing he also enjoyed shelling peas and nipping the beans. On his bike rides or when walking, he would meet people along the way and stopped to chat. He will always be remembered for his joyful laugh and joking around. Even when you could not see him in a crowd you could find him by the sound of his laugh. He was predeceased by his parents, Ambrose & Josephine; his sister Mary; and his son John.
Roman is lovingly survived and remembered by his wife Lavern of 61 years; his daughter Lorna (Kelvin) Henry; his daughter-in-law Teresa; his grandchildren, Travis Henry, Sophie, Tanner and Shane Becker; his special niece Margaret Hughston as well as numerous other nieces and nephews; his brothers and sisters-in-law; and the many special friends and neighbors he made along the way.
Due to Covid 19 restrictions, a private family Graveside Service will be held for Roman at the Shellbrook Cemetery now and a Memorial Service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of tributes, memorial donations may be made in memory of Roman to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
