Roger Owen Williams July 13, 1937 – May 31, 2024
With sadness, the family of Roger Owen Williams, announces his passing on May 31, 2024, at the Wheatland Lodge in Leask, Saskatchewan.
Roger believed in the importance of being involved and connecting with his community. He held various positions in multiple organizations, often volunteering to be on their boards or executives. Over the years he was involved in the Saskatchewan Psychiatric Nurses Association, the Optimist Club of Prince Albert, the Boy Scouts, the United Way, the PA Exhibition Association, the Saskatchewan Association of Agricultural Societies and Exhibitions, Western Canada Fairs, the CN Big 60 Curling Club, SHARE (founding board member), Prince Albert Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse, PA Housing Authority, Saskatchewan Association of Special Care Homes, PA Community Players, the Rawlinson Center, and the PA Heritage Seniors Centre. Over the years, Roger also volunteered in fund raising efforts such as door-to-door canvasing and bingos. He was always prepared to step up.
Roger’s career in healthcare began in North Battleford at the Regional Hospital as an orderly in his late teens. This led him to psychiatric nursing. His nursing career brought him to Prince Albert in 1969 to be part of the new mental health community nursing program, servicing Prince Albert and Northern Saskatchewan. Roger retired from nursing at 49. He had a short stint in real estate owning Allied Realty and worked for a while in the lab at the Victoria Hospital.
Roger is survived by his love of 70 years, Phyllis (nee Crowston); his children Nadine (Brian) Sawtell, Barbara Kit (John Bourgeois), Johanne (Raymond) Brassard, Marilynn Williams, Roger Williams Jr.; his grandchildren Danae and Kendra Sawtell, Cameron (Stacey) Brassard, Michelle (Chase) McCrea, Alex Brassard (Amy Zalenchuk) and Karlee Kit; his granddaughter-in-law Shanice Miller; his great-grandchildren Miguel, Dominic and Steel Miller Kit, Hayden and Kennedy Brassard, and Ada and Quinn McCrea; his sister Connie Bertrand; his sister-in-law Rose Williams; many nieces and nephews; other family members and friends. Roger was predeceased by his parents Donald and Evelyn (nee Griffiths) Williams; his grandson Kyle Kit; and brother Dennis Williams.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Wheatland Lodge in Leask for their wonderful care during Roger’s final days.
A celebration of Roger’s life will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 7, 2024, at the Exhibition Centre, PA Exhibition Grounds. In lieu of other tributes, please make a donation in Roger’s memory to the Wheatland Lodge, Box 130 Leask, SK S0J 1M0, to support the purchase of alternating pressure air mattresses, or to the Boreal Healthcare Foundation, Box 3000 Stn.
