Robert “Bob” Lloyd Barkway
Bob passed away peacefully at the Parkland Integrated Health Center in Shellbrook, SK, on August 22, 2026.
Bob was born in October 1938, to his parents Reginald and Lily in Shellbrook, SK.
Bob grew up on the family farm in the Rich Valley district north of Shellbrook and attended the one-room Rich Valley School. In 1956, Reginald, Lily, and family moved into Shellbrook. In that same year, Bob began working at Agnew Motors while boarding at Mrs. Stead’s with his friend Arnold Holmes, who worked across the street at Chamber’s Massey Harris dealership. During this time Bob attended Kelsey Institute in Saskatoon and apprenticed to become a journeymen automotive mechanic.
Bob married Elizabeth “Betty” Fuller in July 1962 and together they raised two sons. Bob and Betty celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this year.
Bob spent more than 20 years with Agnew Motors, first full time and later part time, balancing winters in the garage with summers on the farm.
Bob farmed in the Rich Valley district with his father for several years before taking over the farm after Reginald passed away. Over the years, he worked closely with Larry Mumm. They helped each other grow their respective farms; Bob the mechanic and Larry the carpenter. Bob retired from farming at age 71 after the 2009 harvest, but he continued to stay busy with projects and daily trips to the farm shop.
Bob was active in the community through the Kinsmen, coaching minor hockey, and, together with Betty, supporting initiatives such as the Parkland Integrated Health Center. He will be remembered for his steady hands, practical skill, and quiet willingness to help where he could.
Bob’s favourite summer activities were camping and fishing in northern Saskatchewan with Betty, the kids, and, as time went on, the grandkids, especially at Nemeiben Lake. The grandkids all learned to fish and waterski in Grandpa’s boat, creating memories that will remain part of the family’s story.
Lasting memories remain with his wife Betty; children Gordon (Shawn) Barkway and Terry (Michelle) Barkway; grandchildren Gregory Barkway, James (Kaitlyn) Barkway, Samantha (Evan) McPhail, Graeme Barkway, and Rebecca (Sean Lockerbie) Barkway; three great-grandchildren; sisters Gladys Halayka and Lois Prosser; sister-in-law Sharon Fuller; and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was predeceased by his parents; sisters Mavis Dewan and Elizabeth “Betty” Jones; brothers-in-law Al Dewan, Delbert Jones, Tom Schapansky, Gerald Halayka, William Fuller, and Stanley Prosser; sister-in-law Mary Jean Schapansky; niece Lana Schapansky; and great-nephew David Wooley.
A Celebration of Life will be held on September 12, 2026, at 2:00pm in the Shellbrook Community Hall, Shellbrook, SK.
In lieu of other tributes, donations in memory of Bob may be directed to the Shellbrook and District Health Services Foundation (Box 33, Shellbrook, SK S0J 2E0) or Saint Andrews Anglican Church in Shellbrook, SK.
