Richard John Lewis Attig passed away from cancer April 20, 2020 with his loving wife Darlene by his side at the Victoria Hospital.

Richard is survived by his wife of 50 years, Darlene (Christie) Attig; his sisters Faye (Attig) Wright and Wendy (Attig) Shave; his aunt Joan Attig and her family; his niece Kandy (Barry) Craigee and their family; his nephew Richard (Tracy) Soloduke and their family; as well as many cousins in Prince Albert and throughout Canada and America. He is also survived by his good friends Ken McNab, Don Anderson, Jim Whiskyjack, the rest of his coffee buddies and his closest and many friends related to him in his faith.

He was predeceased by his dad Dick Attig, his mother Lillian (Schmidt) Attig, his parents-in-law Albert and Kay Christie; his uncle Blaine Attig; his brothers-in-law, Glen Wright and Trevin Shave; and his friends Ed Gutka and Jonathan Smith.

Richard was born in a small house in the town of St. Louis in 1944 as the 2nd of 3 children. In the winter he was kept warm on the wood stove oven door. He left school after grade 11 to work with his then brother-in-law Wally to learn the plumbing trade in Saskatoon. After a few years he came back and finished his grade 12 at Carlton High School. Then, his love of people and desire to help them led him to SIAST in Saskatoon where he studied to become a social worker.

Richard was a good man. He looked after things in his life realistically. He worked at many different jobs. He worked as a plumber’s helper in Saskatoon, as a social worker in Prince Albert, at Sask Penn, at Burns Food, at Canadian Propane (ICG Propane) in Prince Albert, and lastly at PA Rental & Leasing.

He was baptized in 1954 as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and his faith was very important to him throughout his life. After his cancer diagnosis the Bible’s promise of an earth without pain and sickness from Isaiah 33:24, “And no resident will say I am sick”, kept him looking forward to a better time soon to come.

He loved comforting people by sharing his faith with them and the Bible’s hope for the future.

Richard often expressed deep and sincere appreciation for the exceptional care of health care professionals during his lifetime and especially so these past 3 weeks. The care he received at the hospital was phenomenal from the 4th floor nurses and his doctors and other staff. A special thanks to Dr. Bischoff, Dr. Duggleby, Dr. Rajput for his long term care, and Dr. Royeppen for his short term care, and for all their efforts to keep him comfortable throughout his life.

We long to see him whole and healthy again.

A celebration of Richard’s life will occur at a later time.
