Prince Albert, Saskatchewan
Passed away October 17, 2026
With shattered hearts and profound pride in the young man he became, the Farrell family announces the passing of Private Shaun Farrell of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). Shaun tragically lost his life on Saturday, October 17, 2026, during a training exercise at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta, as he prepared for deployment in service to Canada.
Born under South African skies, Shaun made Canada—and Prince Albert, Saskatchewan—his home in 2017. Naturally athletic, vibrant and fiercely competitive, he embraced life with energy and determination, especially on the rugby pitch and the track. His warmth, strength and loyalty left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
Shaun faced obstacles that might have discouraged others. Living with dyslexia and Asperger’s Syndrome, he was once told by a teacher that he would never graduate from high school. But those who knew Shaun understood something essential about him: tell him he could not do something, and he would set out to prove otherwise.
With quiet, bulldog-like tenacity, Shaun refused to let labels define him or allow anyone else to determine his future. He graduated from Carlton Comprehensive High School, a deeply meaningful achievement that reflected his perseverance, discipline and self-belief.
Military service was never simply a career ambition for Shaun. It was his calling, his dream and his purpose. When he earned his place in the Patricias, he found where he belonged. His family and friends watched him grow into a confident, purposeful soldier who embraced the challenges of service with wholehearted commitment and genuine joy.
A close family friend recalled collecting Shaun from the Saskatoon airport when he returned home on his first leave from Basic Military Qualification in Quebec. Throughout the drive to Prince Albert, Shaun could barely contain his excitement. He spoke about his training, his comrades and the pride he felt in wearing the uniform and serving his country. During that visit, those around him saw a young man who had found his calling and was living his life to the fullest.
“Comfort kills Dreams”
Shaun lived by these words and had them tattooed on his side. They reflected his willingness to face challenges, push beyond what felt comfortable and pursue the life he wanted.
To every young person who has struggled, felt different or been told they could not achieve something, Shaun’s life offers a lasting reminder: your challenges do not define you, and adversity does not determine your destiny. The very things that challenge us can also drive us forward.
Beyond his uniform and accomplishments, Shaun was a beloved son, brother, grandson and friend. He leaves behind his loving parents, Roland and Patricia; his brother, Byran; his grandmother, Lynette Lottering; and his extended family and friends. He was a source of immeasurable pride and joy, and his absence leaves a space that words cannot fill.
The Farrell family shares in the grief of the Wong, Goulding and Lykkemark families in Alberta and British Columbia. Their hearts are also with every family whose loved ones were affected by the tragedy at CFB Wainwright.
The family extends its deepest gratitude to the people of Prince Albert, the military community and everyone in Saskatchewan, across Canada and around the world who has offered support. Every meal, floral tribute, prayer, shared memory and heartfelt message has brought comfort during this devastating time. The family also thanks the North Saskatchewan Regiment of the Canadian Armed Forces for making the Prince Albert Armoury available for their gathering.
Military Service and Memorial Tributes
In lieu of flowers, the family asks those wishing to honour Shaun to consider a contribution to the family’s memorial fund. Donations will help ease the burden of funeral expenses and the costs of bringing family members together as they lay him to rest. For those wishing to help, a donation of any amount or sharing the memorial funding page is a meaningful way to support the family now.
Shaun’s only memorial funding page is www.shaunfarrell.ca
The family kindly asks for privacy as they grieve and support one another in the days ahead.
“A life is not measured by its length, but by the courage, purpose and devotion with which it is lived.”
Shaun lived with purpose. He served with honour. He loved deeply and was deeply loved.
Forever loved. Forever remembered. Forever missed.
