Phyllis Hayward
May 28, 1925 – July 1, 2021
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Phyllis (nee Buhr) Hayward at the Victoria Hospital at the age of 96.
Mom was born and grew up on the farm near Waldheim, Sask. She was the eldest child of John and Maria (nee Neufeldt) Buhr. Soon a sister, Ruth and brothers, Allan and Leslie joined the family. She attended “Normal School” in Saskatoon to get her teaching certification. While teaching at Honeywood, her students introduced her to their wonderful uncle Bill. He was a handsome soldier returned home from the Second World War. They married in July of 1949 and moved to the homestead in Briarlea. They farmed together and Mom taught school at Crutwell and Briarlea East. In 1952 mom took time off from teaching to raise a family of three sons and one daughter. In 1961 she returned to teaching at Wild Rose School and retired in 1983. Many of her former students still fondly remember Mrs. Hayward.
Mom and Dad enjoyed their farm, community, church and friends. They had a large extended family of sisters, brothers and their families who often came to visit in the summer. The grandchildren have many good memories of visits at Grandma’s house. Mom and Dad enjoyed a peaceful and relaxed, retired life on the farm until his passing in May of 1998. Mom continued to live on the farm alone. She took pride in caring for her huge yard and gardens and seeing her friends and family. These enjoyable activities kept her strong and healthy both in mind and body.
Mom was a continual learner with an inquisitive mind and organized manner. She was an active member of the Briarlea ACW for 47 years. She “lived” her faith and took pleasure in helping others. She was an exceptional gardener and grew many vegetables and beautiful flowers. Some of these flowers are still flourishing in her garden today. Mom enjoyed seeing new places and travelled on a Panama Canal Cruise, Ireland, Cuba, Dominion Republic, Mexico, Arizona, Hawaii and Western Canada. Mom went para sailing in the Dominican at 78 years old. She claimed it was the best 25 bucks she had ever spent!
Mom decided to move to Caleb Village in 2015 at 90 years of age. She wanted to have someone else do the cooking. She grew flowers on her balcony and made some new friends. After Mom fell and broke her femur, she moved to Ika’s Care Home for more assistance. We appreciate the kind and considerate care she received there. Mom will be missed by many friends and family members.
Phyllis will be lovingly remembered by her children, James “Jim” Hayward and Amy Selsing, Richard and Carol (nee Markowski) Hayward, Donald Hayward and Martina Maguire, Ann (Brent) Wilson; her 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; her siblings, Ruth Bullbeck and Allan Buhr; her in-laws Rob Hayward, Emily Milne, and Reta (Dave) Wurzer. She was predeceased by her husband, William Hayward; her grandso,n Shawn Wilson; her brother, Leslie Buhr and many beloved brothers and sisters-in-law. Rest in peace Mom.
A Public Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Briarlea Anglican Cemetery.
