Paul Kachur was born near Punnichy Saskatchewan on October 5, 1926 and passed away at the age of 91 in the Parkland Integrated Health Centre, Shellbrook on July 7, 2018. He was the third child born into a family of 4 boys and 1 girl to Mary and August Kachur. Paul was raised on the family farm near Lanigan Sask., where he ran across the road to the country school of Elmsville. He attended Normal School in Saskatoon (class of 1945-46) and taught in many locations in Saskatchewan before marrying Lenore in 1955. He was teaching in Foam Lake when Jerry was born and then took a teaching position in Plenty for eight years where Cindy, Natalie and Susan completed the family. He finished his career of 35 years at W.P. Sandin in Shellbrook. Paul was very active in life. In his younger years he played a lot of ball, loved track and field and as a teacher he coached many different sports teams. In the early 1960’s he and his brother Peter built the Emma Lake Golf Course. In his personal life he enjoyed down-hill and cross-country skiing, fishing, canoeing, reading, gardening (especially planting trees), picking berries to make the best chokecherry wine and golfing. Paul also loved Ukrainian music and old-time dancing. Before he retired he found his passion in pottery. Endless hours were spent with Lenore creating beautiful art in their basement workshop. Paul loved to spend time with his grandchildren. He encouraged them to be active in life whether it was in academics, sport, music or art. If he could be there to watch and offer advice he would be there helping. Paul also loved Lenore dearly, and with her death his life was changed. He continued with his interests and slowly his health deteriorated. He loved his home and it was difficult for him to move but he found contentment in the staff and home at Lilly’s Lodge. He spent his last months in the Big River Care Home and in his words as we sat on the deck overlooking Cowan Lake “it’s beautiful here”.
Paul was predeceased by his beloved wife Lenore (Haugan) of 51 years; his mother Mary, and father August; his sister Jean Young; his brothers Bill and Peter; sisters-in-law Rosella Burnside, Marie Edwards, Delilah Farber; brothers-in-law Bob Young, Paul Farber, Dennis Irvine, and Vern Gaertner, his parents-in-law, Myrtle and George Haugan.
