Odny Mary Howe (nee Nystuen) died peacefully on August 17, 2013 with her family at her side at Mont St. Joseph, Prince Albert, SK at the age of 89 years. She leaves to celebrate her life brothers Gordon (Marie) Nystuen and Melvin (Doris) Nystuen, her children Sheila (Willard) Ahenakew, Linda (Stan) Jenkins, Rick (Lancey) Howe and Lonnie (Gerald) Hanson, her grandchildren Holly Purvis , Lee (Darlene) Ahenakew, Dean (Faith) Staff, Julie Evans (Mike Mesluk), Lane (Elaine) Howe, Jessica (Devon) Brown, Twyla Reiter (Trevor Kun) and Tanya Reiter (George Renas), as well as great grandchildren Will & Cole Ahenakew, Madeline, Lilly & Eden Staff, Brock Evans (special friend Reagan), Tayler (special friend Shaun), Joshua & Rylin Reiter, and Austin, Kaitlyn, Michael & Elizabeth Reiter, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. Odny was predeceased by her parents Alfred and Magna Nystuen, husband Earl, infant son Gordon, sons-in-law Lenard Staff and Darrel Reiter. Odny was born March 2, 1924 at the Nystuen family farm in Tynset, Norway. In November 1924, Odny travelled to Canada with her parents to join her maternal grandparents in Bienfait, SK for what was to be a five-year plan. In 1931 they relocated to Spalding, SK, where many family and extended family members still reside. Odny completed high school in Spalding, and then attended Normal School (Teacher’s Training) in Regina. On completion of training she was assigned to the Dunlap School east of Foam Lake, SK where she taught for 3 ½ years. It was there she married her life-long partner, Earl Gordon Howe on July 11, 1945. They farmed east of Foam Lake and just one mile from the Howe family homestead established in 1904. In 1958 the family moved to Spalding where Mom resumed her teaching career. They moved to Kinistino in 1961 and to Prince Albert in 1971. Dad’s farm heart was always in the country, so in 1972 they moved to an acreage east of PA where the youngest two children and all of the grandchildren enjoyed growing up. In Prince Albert, Odny changed careers and worked in health care positions at the Holy Family Hospital, the Victoria Hospital and the Herb Basset Home. After ‘retirement’ Mom went back to her first love and provided day-care for children in her own home for a few more years! Widowed in 1994, she enjoyed travelling to visit out-of-province family and her brother Gordon in Florida. Odny lived independently before moving to MSJ in December 2011 when health challenges slowed her down physically. Through it all she retained her faith, wit, and her wonderful, wry sense of humor. Mom felt very blessed to have such loving family & friends but it is us who were blessed to have this wonderful woman in our lives. Her home was always an open door for family and friends. There are so many friends who knew Odny’s home was their second home and they were welcome anytime. A special ‘Thank You’ to daughter Linda Jenkins and “daughter” Dorothy Holmgren for the many happy hours spent visiting Odny at MSJ, and granddaughter Jessica “Love You, Hug You, Kiss You, Miss You.” A Prayer Service was held on Thursday, August 22, 2013 – 7:00 pm, Chapel at Mont St. Joseph Home, 777 – 28th St E, Prince Albert, SK. A Funeral Service was held on Friday, August 23, 2013 – 1:30 pm, Messiah Lutheran Church, 1796 – 15th Ave E, Prince Albert, SK. In lieu of other tributes, those wishing may make donations in memory of Odny to the Prince Albert Community Clinic, 110 8th Street E., Prince Albert, SK S6V 0V7.
