Nydia Sturby, only child of Kost and Anna Kopachewsky was born on October 9, 1930 and passed away on November 5, 2014 after a year and a half struggle with cancer. She attended Edenbridge School which was just across the road from their farm.
On November 5, 1950 she married Joseph Sturby of the Gronlid district and together they farmed along with her parents. To this union, three children were born; Myron, Lionel, and Joseph Jr. She was a woman full of life and energy, raising her family and being active in church and community activities.
She always had a big garden on the farm. The fall was always a busy time taking meals out to the field at harvest as well as canning, pickling, making jams and butchering chickens. She enjoyed picking berries and mushrooms in the bush along the river but was always concerned about running into a bear.
After moving to Melfort she still grew as big a garden as space would allow. She loved flowers and always had lots of flowers in her front and back yard. After forty years on the farm she spent another twenty-five cooking in restaurants in town.
She will be remembered for being a good spirited woman, a good friend, and remembered for her good food. One year in the early 80’s, she was crowned Melfort’s “Perogy Queen” on a float in the fair parade. You never left her home hungry as she always insisted you had something to eat. After she retired, she would rise at 4 AM during the winters and make perogys of which she gave many away to family and friends. In the summer she still got up at 4 AM to check her flowers and garden and water it before it got too hot. Then she would jump into her little red car and go have coffee with one of her many friends. She also gave away a lot of produce from her garden to friends and family as well. She very seldom missed a Roughrider game on TV and in the winter enjoyed watching curling. After her eyesight got bad and she gave up driving, she enjoyed friends coming over to her home and having coffee and lunch.
