GAUDET, Norma Isabelle (née Morrison)
November 20, 1936 – September 28, 2024
With family by her side, Norma Gaudet passed away Saturday, September 28, 2024 at Lakeview Pioneer Lodge in Wakaw, SK at the age of 87. Norma belongs to a strong Métis family. Her mother, Auxile Lépine and father, Norman Morrison, ensured that all their ten children felt a part of community and church through their work ethics, faith, care giving and role modelling. Being born and raised on the farm and in community, Norma was no exception to fostering a deep value of generosity as a way of life.
On October 24, 1957, Norma and Sylvio Gaudet were married and lived in the Bellevue community. They raised their six children on the Gaudet family farm and continued to instill family traditions in everyday life. Mom’s Catholic faith was strong and speaking French was important to our family. Sundays were important day of the week to go to church and to visit with family and friends. After dinner on Sunday, we learned how to dance from mom and dad. Dancing and music were an important part of life for Norma. Polka and two-step with Dad in the kitchen while Mom made lunch was common.
Mom was an exceptional cook who always tried new recipes and fed anyone who dropped in. Mom made everyone feel welcome and at home. There were no strangers to her. We had a big garden so there was a variety of canned vegetables, fruit, jams, and potatoes stored for the winter months. Mom had vibrant flower beds and the garden filled with colourful flowers that brought her great joy! She sure had a green thumb. They raised pigs and chickens. Working hard, helping each other as neighbours, camping and fishing during summer months were a balanced way of life that mom created. She loved to treat us with movies at Wakaw Theatre, bowling in Rosthern and many summer picnics at Little Red and Wakaw Lake. Mom & Dad enjoyed holidays to Hawaii, Mexico and many trips to BC, Edmonton, Ottawa, and Quebec over the years.
She had various employment outside of the home over the years. The most rewarding was working at Light of the Prairies group home as a caregiver for 12 years in Saskatoon where her brothers Donald and Doug resided. She was also a devoted sister to the twins Marilyn & Evelyn.
Mom felt honoured when she first received her new title as Grandmother in 1976. Her grandchildren always felt so special when they arrived at Mémère’s house. It also made her day when she was greeted by “Allo Ma Tante Norma” and “Hello Auntie Norma” by her many nieces and nephews. Mom had many close friends and always had a smile for everyone she encountered. She was a true community woman.
Mom is loved by her husband Sylvio Gaudet of 67 years, her children Mona Markwart (Larry), Carol Roy (Armand), Pat Gaudet (Rob Sorensen), Joan Sinclair (Jack), Perry Gaudet (Gail), Cindy Gaudet (Glenn Hamilton). She will be missed by her 22 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild. She is survived by her siblings Duncan Morrison (Joan), Douglas Morrison, Ken Morrison (Marlene), Evelyn Morrison, Marilyn Morrison, Mel Morrison. Sister-in-law: Evelyn Morrison and numerous nieces and nephews. Norma was predeceased by her parents Norman & Auxile (Lépine) Morrison, sister Christina Grenier (Aubin), brothers Donald Morrison and John Morrison, grandson Eric Roy, great grandchildren Eva Denis and Marie-Pierre Carlson Sinclair.
The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the amazing staff at Lakeview Pioneer Lodge for their care of Mom and continue support for Dad, who admired them as a couple.
