It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Nickolas “Nick” Mischuk. Nick passed away at the Herb Bassett Home on January 5, 2020, with his family by his side.
Nick was born in the Ukraine to parents, James and Effie Mischuk on March 3, 1924. When he was just a young boy his family immigrated to Canada, settling in the Paddockwood area. Nick had to leave school in grade 5 to help work on the family farm. When Nick was eighteen he worked in the mines in Sudbury, Ontario. Upon returning home he continued to farm and worked in the bush hauling logs to sawmills in Candle Lake by horse teams. Nick married his wife Elsie in 1957 at Forest Gate Church, north of Paddockwood. They lived and worked on the family farm until 1969, at which time they moved to their own farm in the Strong Pine area. Nick farmed and raised cattle for 30 years and also drove the school bus to Meath Park for a number of those years.
Nick loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed going to watch his grandchildren’s hockey games, when they were young. Nick enjoyed gardening, sitting under his shaded tree, drives in the country and coffee with friends. He also enjoyed watching the Raiders or listening to their games on the radio for many seasons. Nick was always the first person to offer a helping hand to his family or friends in need.
Nick will be lovingly remembered by his children: Don (Connie) Mischuk, Carol (Clint Anderson) Mischuk; his grandchildren: Adam Mischuk, Laura (Mathieu Gaudet) Mischuk, Brad Mischuk and Novalee Anderson; his sisters-in-law: Evelyn Mischuk and Louise Weleski; his brother-in-law: Joe Weleski; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents: James and Effie Mischuk; his wife, Elsie in 1997; his son, Tim in 1993; his sisters: Eva (Harry) Toporowski and Annie (John) Pidborochynski; his brothers: Alex, Bill, Paul and Harry Mischuk; his parents-in-law: Nick and Florence Weleski; his brother and sisters-in-law: Mary (Jim) Sokoluik, John Weleski, Olga Dorion, Annie Weleski, Victoria (Harry) Toporowski, Walter Weleski, Rose (Earl) Slone, Katie (Mike) Pidborochynski and Dorothy Weleski.
