Nick passed away on October 2, 2023, with his wife, Olga, by his side. He was born in the Henribourg area, the youngest of 4 children. Nick was a farmer but started his working career with D.M. Connoly from Christopher Lake, learning how to operate a caterpillar. He cleared land, made dugouts and worked on the DEW line in Northern Sask. Later he worked for Brent Construction on the overpass and roads leading to the Diefenbaker bridge in Prince Albert. He was a grader operator for the RM of Paddockwood, and also for Geo Carruthers in Christopher Lake area. During this time, he continued to farm, but his health forced him to quit farming in the early 1980’s. For a few years he was a fishing guide in Northern Sask. Nick married Olga in 1959 and they had two girls, Donna and Julie. Sadly, they lost Donna in 1988. In his younger years he liked to curl and enjoyed playing cards, taking bus trips and going to Seniors clubs. Nick loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting and snowmobiling. For a number of years, he and Al escorted the Canadian Challenge Dog Race to Lac La Ronge. Robert Smith and Nick started P.A. North Search & Rescue and he was a founding member of Buckland Highway 355 Lions Club and Spruce Home Seniors. He was also a member of Trail Riders Arena where he called Bingo and helped with the catering, he especially liked roasting large hips of beef or bison. After a successful moose or elk hunt there were meat cutting and sausage making sessions with Laurence. There were many good times spent at the “Moose Caboose’ with stories and card games. Another adventure he enjoyed was the snowmobile trip from Points North to Uranium City.
Nick is lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Olga (nee Skoropat); his daughter: Julie; his nieces: Faye (Julius) Dryka, and Cheryl Moberly; his nephews: Jack Cuthbert (Lea Spooner) and Garry (Elise Czychowski); his sister-in-law: Mary Friesen; as well as numerous great nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
