Nellie Alice Gariepy
July 30, 1934 – March 9, 2026
Nellie was born to parents, Steve and Mary Palidwar, and raised in Prince Albert. She was a loving wife of 71 years to Jim, and a dedicated loving mother to Todd who cared for her unconditionally until her passing. She also forever loved and remembered her son, Jimmy, who passed away in 1992.
Being born into an active family of 7 siblings, Nellie and her sisters could be little pranksters and if you saw them giggling together at an event you knew they were up to something! Nellie spent many afternoons sitting with her sister Helen at Granny and Grampas, going to the casino, going on many fun trips and enjoying many big family gatherings. One time on their travels they were on the game show “Winfall” and won 2 lovely armchairs. Another time they had their picture taken with the star of “The X Files”. It never failed to bring a laugh from her husband Jim when people’s faces appeared shocked after hearing a few choice cuss words coming from Nellie’s mouth! You would never think!! Nellie’s home was always welcoming with pictures of family, flowers and plaques with comforting sayings, as well as photos of the pets she adored over the years.
Nellie always placed her family before herself and in the words of her son, Todd – “Mom was always telling me to keep on doing what I had to do – go home and take care of Tina and Asha, and that when she goes she will miss us and for Dad and I to take care of each other”.
Mom will always be remembered for all the love she gave and for her caring and warm smile. She always made sure that anyone who came to visit would never leave hungry and she always knew what to say to make a person feel better.
Although she was bedridden for the last few months of her life, throughout all that time she did not complain. Jim was often by her side, sitting on the edge of the bed as Nellie would reach for his hand and they would just sit quietly holding hands. That is what 71 years of marriage should look like.
Nellie sometimes remarked that she wanted to go “Home”. It was as if she could see “all the struggles of this life in the light of eternity”, and we know she would have had a wonderful welcoming committee! She passed away peacefully at home in her sleep, exactly how she wished it to be. After her passing as Todd sat with her in her room, Nellie’s favorite song – The Dance, by Garth Brooks, played on the radio. Todd said it was like Mom was trying to let us know that she is now at peace and is watching over us. She will be missed so much by Dad, Todd, Tina and granddog, Asha.
Left to mourn her passing are her husband Jim; her son, Todd (Tina and son Jeff); her brother, Steve (Jean) Palidwar of Prince Albert; her sister, Ann Britton of Surrey, BC; her sisters-in- law, Pat Palidwar of Langley, BC, and Irene Hamilton of Prince Albert; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
