Position Summary:
Reporting to the Mental Health Program Manger, the Navigational Support Worker will provide support regarding “The First Nation Child and Family Services and Jordan’s Principle Class Settlement Agreement”. This position will provide emotional and cultural support services to class members throughout the process of the Settlement Agreement. The program includes culturally appropriate and trauma-informed care to counsel individuals, families, and groups, or engage in prevention programs.
Responsibilities:
The Navigational Support Worker will be responsible for providing support to those that have been affected and are applying for “The First Nation Child and Family Services and Jordan’s Principle Class Settlement”.
- Providing presentations, and workshops regarding the settlement process.
- Provide Emotional Support during the claims process.
- Provide referrals to community resources such as Elders, healers, addiction support, and mental health support.
- Identify gaps in current services and advocate on behalf of class member whenever necessary.
- Meet with class member in a variety of settings to support the client in accessing services.
- Foster cultural connections in all stages of the process.
- Supporting and helping to prepare class members during all stages of their claims process.
- Complete outreach work at urban and community events.
- Prepare monthly reports and statistics for supervisor.
- Completing required reports and data collection.
- Participate in STC Accreditation maintaining best practices and quality improvement.
- Participating and completing required education and training.
- Maintain files and documentation at an excellent standard.
- Perform other related duties as defined and assigned by the reporting Director or designate on an as-required basis.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Post-secondary education a related human services field; and
- Minimum 2 years of directly related work experience; OR
- Comparable combination of education and work experience.
- Experience working in a supportive and advocacy role.
- Awareness of First Nation values, culture, and traditions.
- Ability to speak or understand a First Nations language an asset.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint with an ability to easily learn new software applications.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge and understanding of the history and effects of First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan’s Principle Settlement
- Knowledge of mental health issues.
- Ability to gain trust and confidence in a supporting role.
- Organizational skills, including maintaining both written and oral data.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and to self-motivate.
- Organization, time management, and multi-tasking skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint platforms.
- Ability to work as a team and with STC’s seven Member Nations.
- Ability to organize and plan community events.
- Ability to develop and deliver presentations.
- An understanding of the dynamics of First Nations communities.
- Familiarity and understanding of challenges encountered by First Nations people within the health care system.
- Ability to demonstrate respect, uphold STC’s strategic objectives and provide support to a member community.
- Knowledge of the political, social, and economic objectives of the Saskatoon Tribal Council and of the Dakota, Cree, and Saulteaux cultures will be considered an asset.
OTHER:
- The position is based at the Saskatoon Packham main office with travel to community.
- Must be willing to work flexible hours, evenings, and weekends, and to perform other related duties as required or assigned.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Saskatchewan driver’s license throughout employment and meet STC’s insurance requirements, as well as, have access to a reliable roadworthy vehicle.
- Must be able to provide a satisfactory current, original Canadian Criminal Record Check (CPIC) which will include the vulnerable sector check.
