Nancy Porcina (née Flegg)
May 7, 1953 – May 24, 2024
It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nancy Carol Porcina (nee Flegg) on Friday, May 24, 2024, at the age of 71 years, following a sudden and unexpected illness.
Nancy was born on May 7, 1953, in Regina, SK, but grew up in Saskatoon, SK. In 1976, she completed a Bachelor of Physical Health and a Bachelor of Education at the University of Saskatchewan. Upon graduation, she moved to Prince Albert, where she met her husband, Doug Porcina. She began her work at the Saskatchewan River School Division; she taught there for 30 years, including physical education, library science, and computer science. Nancy touched many students with her boundless ability to care for and foster their learning.
Nancy was fortunate to retire in 2007. Since then, she and Doug had the opportunity to work with Lobstick Tours in Prince Albert as tour guides. They took numerous groups to places all over the world. When talking with Nancy, her love of travel was very apparent. The teaching background was a true benefit for this retirement “gig” that she and Doug had. Nancy often had a new story to share about one of the many adventures they had been on.
During her time in Prince Albert, Nancy always participated in the community. She was President of the Kinettes Club, a member of the IODE, active in her church, and was involved in various other community activities. She always felt that the arts were very important. Nancy also spent numerous hours fundraising to make the EA Rawlinson Center in Prince Albert a reality. Once it was built, she enjoyed volunteering as a bartender, in order to take in the entertainment.
In 2021, Nancy and Doug relocated to Regina to be closer to their daughter and granddaughter.
Nancy was a loving mother and grandmother. She spent a lot of time in the kitchen with her granddaughter, Onnalee. She was well known for her ability to prepare a superb version of almost anything. Nancy loved to entertain and would always “put on the dog”, as she would say. Her green thumb got her onto the gardening tour in Prince Albert for many years. Her potted plants at the cottage at Echo Lake were something many people looked forward to seeing every year. Later in life, Nancy sparked an interest in quilting, in which she developed considerable expertise. She was a member of the Prince Albert Quilting Club, the Katepwa Quilting Club, and the Country Stitches Quilters in Edgeley, SK.
The cottage at B-Say-Tah was Nancy’s happy place. It has been in her family for 100 years. As a young person, she spent the majority of summers there, and has retained the many friendships that she developed at the beach over the years. The cottage is so important to the family that right after Nancy passed, they drove out to the cottage for the weekend to be closer in spirit to Nancy at the place she so loved.
Nancy was predeceased by her parents, Don and Carol Flegg. Left to mourn Nancy are her husband, Doug Porcina; her daughter, Bronwen Porcina and granddaughter Onnalee Porcina; her son, Mark (Kas) Porcina; her brother, Rob (Diane) Flegg; her uncle, Bob Fowlie (Virginia Thompson); as well as numerous other family and friends.
Celebration of Nancy’s Life will be held at a later date, details to be announced.
The family wishes to thank the staff and doctors at the palliative care unit of the Pasqua Hospital for their loving care of Nancy during her final days.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are graciously accepted to the Country Stitches Quilters (Isobel Fishley: Box 400, Balcarres, SK, SOG 0C0 / or etransfer 1-306- 332-8077).
