Muriel Margaret Ledoux
June 10, 1939 – June 17, 2014
Muriel Margaret Ledoux died peacefully on June 17, 2014 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. She was the daughter of Justine (Chatelain) and Victor Daniels. She was also the granddaughter to Eleanor (Riel) and Norbert Daniels, and Helen (Desjarlais) and Antoine Chatelain. Muriel was born on June 10, 1939 on the Mistawasis First Nation and was raised by her grandparents Eleanor and Norbert. In her lifetime, Muriel shared fascinating stories of her travels by horse drawn wagon over great distances; much of the family’s spare time was spent visiting her grandmother Eleanor’s relatives in the east. Muriel had four brothers (Ivan, Lawrence, Noel and Thomas) and three sisters (Yvonne, Helen and Anne); she was the fourth youngest of eight children. At the age of eight, Muriel commenced school at St. Michael’s in Duck Lake. She attended the school for eight years where she completed a grade eight education. In 1957 Muriel married Richard Simaganis and moved to the Poundmaker First Nation. They separated shortly before Muriel gave birth to her second child in 1959; at this time, Muriel was left to provide for herself and two children (Valerie and Helen). Muriel eventually made the selfless decision to leave her children in her mother’s care in hopes to find work outside of the reserve. Life on the reserve was a hardship for Muriel and when she left in 1959, she vowed she would never live on the reserve again. Holding true to this, Muriel resided in the town of Leask and the city of Prince Albert for the remainder of her life. In 1963, she met Leo Ledoux, who was her partner and husband until she passed. Together, they were blessed with four children (Ruby, Cecile, Leo, Pamela). Muriel was an avid gardener, cook and baker. She found tremendous joy in providing for and nurturing her family. Reading was one of her favorite passions; in particular, she enjoyed American Western novels by Louis L’Amore. Muriel enjoyed an eclectic mix of music ranging from Pavarotti’s “Ave Maria” to the traditional Cree songs of Harvey Dreaver. She lived in Prince Albert for many years until the passing of her mother-in-law in 1989; at this time, Muriel moved back to Leask where she lived for over 20 years. She spent her past few years at the Herb Bassett Care Home where she was very well cared for by a group of loving and devoted nurses. Although Muriel suffered the onset of Alzheimer’s she was still able to recall long-term memory of her life with her grandparents at the Daniels’ homestead. This brought great comfort to her and her children and grandchildren. Muriel’s children and grandchildren will always remember her as a woman of great inner strength and tremendous personal integrity. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Muriel is survived by her husband Leo; her children Valerie (Bert) Bretts, Helen Semaganis (Donald Worme), Ruby Simaganis, Cecile Gabriel, Leo Jr. (Josie) Ledoux, Pamela Semaganis; Muriel’s beloved 25 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; her brother Noel (Thelma) Daniels; her sisters Yvonne Longjohn and Anne Pambrun; and numerous nieces nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her grandparents Norbert and Eleanor Daniels; her parents Victor and Justine Daniels; her brothers Ivan, Lawrence and Thomas Daniels; her sister Helen Daniels; her brothers-in-law Alan Longjohn and Fred Pambrun; her sister-in-law Marina Daniels; her grandchild Heaven Dorion. A Prayer Service and Wake will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at St. Michael Parish, 1505 – 13th Street West, Prince Albert, SK with Margaret Ferchuk officiating.
