Pearl Zelensky
1934 – 2024
It is with great sadness and much love that we say goodbye to our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Pearl Lena (née Johnson) Zelensky, who passed away suddenly July 5, 2024, at the age of 90 years.
Pearl is lovingly remembered by: her children Curtis, Kim (Colin) Neudorf, Leon (Heather), Rodney (Sandy); her grandchildren: Janet (Gordon) Vandale, Angela (Oliver DeBoer) Zelensky, Mark (Sherlyn) Neudorf, Jillian Neudorf, Brett (Amanda Geradts) Zelensky, Mathew (Peter) Zelensky, Laurel (Jordan Gosselin) Zelensky, Beth (Rejean Fortier) Zelensky, and Jaclyn Zelensky ; 6 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren; her surviving brothers Norman and Ervin Johnson; and sisters-in-law Kathy Johnson, Lena Johnson, Shirley Johnson, Janice Johnson, Gail Johnson, and Sophie Zelensky; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Walter Zelensky; her parents, George and Lucy (née Head) Johnson; her brothers Walfred, Wallace, Kenneth, and Gary; and many other friends and family members.
Pearl was born in Nestledown, Saskatchewan. She attended Silent Call School and Canwood High School. She was working at the Canadian Bank of Commerce when Walter swept her off her feet, and they were married in 1955. Together they farmed the Zelensky family homestead in the Kalyna community, north east of Prince Albert. As a farmwoman, Mom tended to the farm animals, chickens, garden, fruit and berry trees, drove the field equipment, oversaw the bookkeeping, and more. She paid for the groceries and family extras by selling eggs and milk. She also worked at the Pulp Mill commissary, U and R Tax office, and Nutters. Mom enjoyed making a cozy home for her family and arranging fun filled sleepovers for her grandchildren. She was a talented seamstress and fed our ravenous bodies with three square meals a day and coffee breaks in between. Mom and Dad worked beautifully together on their farm and on the dance floor. She was known for her kind, gentle and non-judgmental nature. We didn’t do too much wrong in her eyes. She was remarkably optimistic. “Why worry? It doesn’t do any good,” she would say. Mom and Dad balanced out in this way. While Mom was quiet and reserved, Dad was jovial and outgoing. Together they brought joy and comfort to anyone in any situation. They retired to Prince Albert in 1990 and together built a home, and a new community of friends and interests. Mom valued her health and fitness and shared nuggets of information that would keep us “healthy.” She was a tremendous role model for her family. We will forever treasure the memory of her beautiful smile and the laughter she shared so easily.
To honour Mom’s life, please join her family at Gray’s Funeral Chapel, 575 28th Street West, Prince Albert on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Private interment will be held at Memorial Gardens.
