Marie-Ange Isabelle Markowski (nee Smith)
1934 – 2024
Marie-Ange Isabelle Markowski (nee Smith) passed away on Tuesday May 28, 2024 at Mont St. Joseph Home, with her daughter by her side. She would have turned 90 in September.
Marie was born to Theophile and Lillian Smith on September 8, 1934 in Duck Lake Sask. She was the fourth born of 14 children, 7 girls and 7 boys – her siblings: Evelyn (Marius), Ovila (Ruth), Mary (Lou), Phylis (Julien), Ray (Joylene), Franklin (Marlene), Anita (Frank), Darryl (Sally), Diane (Bill), Ben (Debbie), Jeff (Carol), Monique (Terry), and Gayle (Jean). She was a daughter, wife, mom, sister, aunty, sister-in-law, friend, a grandma and her starring role as “Memere”.
Marie is survived by her three children: sons Kevin (Karen) Markowski and Kane (Theresa) Markowski, and daughter Kenah Markowski; her grandchildren Kyren (Jacinda), Kyler (Melissa), Kalyn, Key-el (Trisha), and Karsten (Shanna); and two beautiful great grandchildren Knox and Myra; and many other family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Theophile and Lillian Smith, her husband Fred Markowski, and other relatives.
Mom worked hard throughout her life. For many years she worked as a seamstress and a fur finisher. In 1989, Mom and Dad bought their last home. It was a small cabin at Emma Lake and together they remodeled and built their home. No projects were ever too big for Mom and Dad. They would cut and haul wood in and keep their home warm with fire in the stove. Mom was also an avid knitter and crocheter. Family and friends were guaranteed to receive knitted dishcloths, or slippers, or Christmas stockings. Mom was famous for her perogies. You could always count on her to bring them to family gatherings. Mom also took pride in being a Legion Member.
Mom was a huge sports fan. She loved to watch curling, hockey and of course the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Her house and yard were always decorated with Rider gear, as well her closet was filled with Rider clothes.
Mom shared a very special bond with her youngest grandson Karsten. Her and Dad could always be counted on to babysit him when he was young. Later on there was very few hockey or ball games that she would miss. She loved to watch Karsten play his sports. Their bond was beautiful. Karsten always made the time to visit his Memere, bringing his wife, Shanna and son, Knox.
Mom lived on her own up until the last few years, when she made the move to Mt. St Joseph Nursing Home, where she found strength and solace with attending church services with Father DJ, who became a loved friend. She loved to hear him sing.
The family would like to thank the staff of Mt. St Joseph Nursing Home for their kindness and patience in caring for Mom.
A Graveside Service for both Mom and Dad will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2024 at St. Christopher’s Anglican Cemetery, Christopher Lake, SK.
