Gertrude Poier
1933 – 2026
Gertrude Gladys Jocelene Poier (nee Haberstock) peacefully left this world for her Heavenly Home, January 14, 2026 (age 92), in the presence of her sons.
Gertrude (Gerdie) was born September 27, 1933, in Stewart, Minn., when her family temporarily relocated to the U.S. She was the 8th child in a family of 11 children born to Fred and Adele Haberstock (Dressler). Her childhood was spent on a farm in the Churchbridge, SK. area. Life was busy on the farm with a large family and much to do. However, she was very active in youth and church activities. That was where she met the love of her life, Roland Poier.
The couple married in June 1953 and were blessed with 67 years of marriage. They set up house and home in Yorkton, SK. helping to run the family-owned corner store, Broadway Groceteria, for 19 years. In Yorkton, they raised four boys and were active in the church and community.
The family moved to Prince Albert in 1971 when Roland accepted a transfer to manage the Co-op Dry Goods Department, where he remained for 20 years. Gerdie was proud of her multiple roles and skills as homemaker, while also taking on other part-time employment or hosting occasional boarders. Until recently Mom stayed interested in news and events, in reading and learning. She also had an eye for beauty, in nature, and in her own creations, whether it was her gardening and flowers, her sewing, or crafting.
She lived her Christian faith in many ways, contributing throughout her life as a volunteer in the local community (hospital, institutional, social visitations, senior’s advocacy, singing groups), and in church work, particularly her leadership in local and regional women’s associations. Along with Dad, they were dedicated member-elders of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Prince Albert for fifty years, holding different positions within the congregation.
Together they raised four sons Grant (Cori), Brian (Kathleen), Glen (Betty), and Kevin. She loved, and was dearly loved by her family, which grew to include grandchildren Tyler, Jordan, Tristan, Kylie, Desarae and Samantha; and four great grandchildren, Portia, London, Oakley and Nikita.
Gerdie was predeceased by her father Fred and mother Adele, her cherished husband Roland and son Glen; siblings Wilfred, Elmer, Selma, Luella, Elfrieda and Jerome; and in-laws Carl, Frank, Herman, Erwin, David, and all of Roland’s Poier siblings.
Left to cherish the memory of Gerdie are her sons and their families; siblings Rodney, Jeanette, Marjorie, Harold and their families; Haberstock cousins, nieces and nephews; special cousins Roxy and Norm; and the extended Poier lineage into which she married.
The family wishes to thank Pat and the “adopted daughters” of Dorothy, Jinsil, and Rose at Good Shepherd Villa where she lived for the last six years, as well as the staff at Rose Garden Hospice for the exceptional care to Mom during her final days.
Donations in remembrance of Gertrude can be made to: The Lutheran Hour Ministries of Lutheran Laymen’s League of Canada, Canadian Lutheran World Relief, Rose Garden Hospice, or a charity of your choice.
The Funeral Service for Gertrude will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Gray’s Funeral Chapel, 575 28th Street West, Prince Albert, SK. Interment will follow at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens.
