Evelyn Schai

1937 ~ 2023

With immense sorrow and great love, we announce the peaceful passing of Evelyn Schai (nee Johnston) on her 86^th birthday.

Evelyn was born on May 8, 1937 and grew up and attended school in Prince Albert while spending her summers at the family cabin at Emma Lake. She married Garnet Schai and together they moved to New York where Garnet continued his hockey career.  Several years later, when they decided to have a family, they returned to Prince Albert to stay.

For many years Evelyn was a member of the Prince Albert Kennel Club.  She trained German Shepherds and showed them throughout western Canada.  She was very successful and earned #1 Obedience German Shepherd in Canada and Top Ten All Breed Obedience Dog in Canada.  She loved horses and spent many hours on the trails with her family. She also fostered dogs for the SPCA when they lived out on the acreage.

Evelyn enjoyed camping in the summers and travelling to warm destinations in the winter; especially California which is where her son and his family live. She had a great love of books and read right up to her last few days.  She had a very healthy life and was hiking at Little Red with her daughter and their dogs shortly before her passing.

Evelyn was predeceased by her husband of 60 years Garnet Schai, her father James Johnston, her mother Myrtle (nee Slater) Johnston, sister-in-law Olga Johnston, special son-in-law Todd Horner, and life-long friends Louis & Shirley Receveur.

She will be forever loved and remembered by her son Randall (Sarah) Schai, daughter Linda Schai, granddaughters Elizabeth & Evangeline, brother Ernie Johnston, nieces, nephews, and friends.

At Mom’s request, there will be no service.  A private interment will be held at a later date. Anyone wishing to make a memorial donation in her name, may do so to the Prince Albert SPCA Box 1832 Prince Albert, SK S6V 6J9 or the charity of the donor’s choice.
