Stanley Arnold Vermette: many fondly called him Jack; the Ole Foxfarmers called him Toodik; and I called him Dad. He was born on the 9th of October, 1929. On the 18th of July, 2022, at 11:45 a.m., Dad left us to be with his Creator at the age of 92.
My Dad was amazing! His childhood was not an easy one. Growing up in a poor community in Prince Albert N. W. commonly known then as the Foxfarm where the majority of people were on welfare, he had to stop going to school in grade 3. Through sheer strength of character, physical prowess, and Spirit, Dad forged ahead making his life full of cherished people and memories. Dad was a hard-working man. He owned Prince Albert Building Movers Ltd. – Big or Small we move them All. Starting his semi-trucks every morning at 4 or 5 a.m. was a common thing during the moving season. In the evenings and weekends he serviced his trucks to keep them in good working order. During the winter he looked after the Nordale Hockey rink. During his spare time, the whole family went to my brothers’ ball games in the summer and the hockey games in the winter with tournaments on the weekends. Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays took up the rest of his spare time. Dad instilled his strong sense of work into us. Every one of us children graduated grade 12, every one of us had a part-time job in high school, three graduated from University, and one graduated from a Technical Institute. My dad had many friends. Retirement meant going for coffee with his group of friends at the Food Court and then his walk around the mall for physical exercise every morning. Every time I took him to town, there was always friends of his stopping to talk with him. One of my favourite memories is watching my mom and dad dance. They had this polka dance where they would dance side-by-side then dad would spin my mom around with great big smiles on their faces the whole time. Good times were had by all. One of my mom’s favourite memories was that they always got along and never argued. They celebrated 72nd wedding anniversary 20-Jan-2022. Mom said, “Dad was the best husband in the world.”
