Arnold “Arnie” James Selander
September 17, 1940 – December 6, 2023
It is with great sadness and very heavy hearts the family of Arnold James Selander announce his passing on December 6, 2023 at the age of 83 years after fighting a very courageous battle with lung cancer.
Arnie was born in Prince Albert, SK on September 17, 1940 to Edwin and Lena Selander. He was raised in the community of Tweedsmuir, SK where his family owned and operated the Tweedsmuir General Store. Arnie was the middle of his 2 brothers and 1 sister.
Arnie attended school at Tweedsmuir and then Composite Comprehensive High School in Prince Albert. Arnie started his career with SaskPower as a power-line operator. While working in Prince Albert he met the love of his life and best friend Gladys Woloshyn. Arne and Gladys were married on December 29, 1962. They were blessed with 2 sons, Brent and Greg.
Due to health issues, Arnie had to take an early leave from SaskPower. This opened a new opportunity for Arnie. His parents retired and Arnie and his brother Lorne along with their spouses took over the Tweedsmuir General Store. Arnie and Gladys eventually became sole owners of the store until their retirement.
They loved to travel, mainly visiting family in Alberta and family on the island in BC. Their trips also consisted of touring Niagara Falls and then on to the Maritimes for another beautiful vacation. Arizona was another destination they attended visiting his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jim and Debbie Juker. Their trip to Arizona included stops made at Las Vegas and a few other gambling sites along the way.
A major part of Arnie’s life involved fishing. Arnie and Gladys would spend endless weekends at The Narrows at Waskesiu and at Sandy Lake. Arnie loved his fishing and hunting and spending time with his remarkably close friends, fishing buddies, and families that surrounded him.
Family get-togethers were a highlight for Arnie. He enjoyed playing croquet and often came out as the winner. He had no mercy on anyone. His latest game achievement was the toss baseball game. He ended up being a “dead-eye Dyck” playing this game.
Due to the size of our family, we would rent a hall for Christmas. Upon entering the hall, we had a draw box set up for giveaways. We also used this draw box to get chores done around the hall such as clean up and doing dishes. Little did Arnie know as he put his name in the draw box several times only to be drawn several times for dishes and clean up! His dry sense of humor and one liners will be certainly missed. He was a beautiful soul and truly one of a kind that touched the hearts of many people. We were a huge and grateful family that enjoyed the time spent together.
Arnie will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years Gladys; his son, Brent and his children Jenna (Landon) and their children Alayah and Kamara, and Alex; his son Greg (Tina) and their children Larissa (Brady) and their son Grayson, Chrissy, Chantele, Ryan, Zach, and Hope. Leaving to mourn him as well is his brother Ron (Gale); his sister Audrey (Rodney); and his sisters-in-law Ann, Marylee, Margaret, Allison, Betsy, and Sharon; his brothers-in-law Harold (Helen), Allan, Bob (Ruby), and Jim; his special friend Jason Bantle; as well as numerous extended family and friends.
Arnie was predeceased by his parents Ed and Lena (nee Stene); his brother Lorne; his sisters-in-law Jenny, Mary, Irene, Violet, and Debbie; and his brothers-in-law Alex, Clare, Lloyd, Toby, and Larry.
At Arnie’s request no formal service will be held.
