Andrew Clifford “Cliff” Hlewka
July 20, 1940 – August 18, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Andrew Clifford “Cliff” Hlewka on August 18, 2025, at the age of 85.
Cliff was born on July 20, 1940, in Smeaton, Saskatchewan, to William and Leona Hlewka. He spent his childhood on the family farm with his siblings, Wally (Walter) and Don, alongside his father William and stepmother Ann, and also cherished summers in Toronto with his mother Leona, stepfather Chess, and his brother Albert. Cliff was extremely proud of his Métis heritage, as his mother Leona was a direct descendant of the Caron family of Batoche, and he carried that legacy with pride throughout his life.
At 18, Cliff met the love of his life, Judy, and from that moment on the two were inseparable. They married in 1960 and shared a deep and meaningful love that lasted more than 60 years. When Judy passed away in 2021, Cliff was deeply affected; her loss left a space in his heart that could never be filled. Their bond remained unbroken, and his devotion to her endured until his final days. Together they raised two children, daughter Andie (1963) and son Robyn (1970), creating a family life full of warmth, humor, and dedication.
Cliff proudly served in the Royal Canadian Navy, sailing aboard the H.M.C.S. Ontario to Pearl Harbour, Fiji, New Zealand, and Honolulu, as well as serving on the H.M.C.S. Cornwallis, H.M.C.S. Portage, H.M.C.S. Sault Ste. Marie, and H.M.C.S. Wallaceburg. His naval years gave him a lifetime of stories and treasured memories.
After his service, Cliff and Judy worked side by side in several business ventures — a convenience store, a radiator shop, and a restaurant — before Cliff returned to the radiator trade at PA Radiator, the family business started by his father in 1940. He carried it on with pride until his retirement in 2007.
Family was always at the center of Cliff’s life. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a loyal friend. He shared an especially close bond with his father-in-law, Ed, who was not only family but also his best friend. Cliff’s steady presence, kindness, and love will be remembered by all who knew him.
Cliff is survived by his children Andie and Robyn; his granddaughter Tyra; his brothers Don and Albert; and many extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Judy; his daughter-in-law Faye Hlewka; his siblings Wally (Walter) and Brenda; and his parents and step-parents.
Cliff’s life was defined by love, loyalty, and hard work. After four years apart, he is reunited with Judy, his lifelong partner and true love.
In accordance with his wishes, a private family interment will be held.
