1932 – 2024
It is with great sadness the family of Mr. John “J.R.” Whitter announce his passing on May 13, 2024 at the age of 91 years.
Dad was born to John and Emily (nee Cowles) Whitter on October 23, 1932, living his life in Prince Albert. He attended Prince Edward School and PACI graduating in 1950, when he joined his father in Whitter Motors Ltd Nash and Austin Car Dealership. He attended C.V.T.S. in Saskatoon receiving his Journeyman Certificate in Mechanics. Lakeview Esso (a branch of Whitter Motors) is where he worked for 10 summers (May 15 to September 15) at Waskesiu Lake. June 1, 1956 Whitters Esso 24 hour Service Truck Stop and Restaurant opened. With mechanics on duty 24 hours and 3 radio equipped service trucks, it was a very busy place winter and summer. In later years they were joined by Larry Whitter. On January 1, 1969 John Sr. passed away suddenly at age 60 from a stroke. He was very sadly missed.
In 1972 Dad moved on to Whitter’s Shell Bulk delivering fuel with 3 trailer trucks to farmers and service stations. In this period, he also joined with some business friends and purchased the Lincoln Hotel, which they operated until 1979 until it was sold. The property is now the Gateway Mall.
In 1980 he purchased the recently built apartment “Fifth and Manor” which he operated until he sold in 1999 and retired. During this time period he taught mechanics at SIAST for 3 years as assistant instructor with Len Kezar as Supervisor.
Dad spent many enjoyable years as a member of the Kinsmen Club where he met many lifetime friends.
Bird Hunting and fishing were his favorite hobbies, where he made many friends. Many enjoyable times were spent with grandchildren teaching them fishing techniques and hunter safety.
He travelled to many countries especially Mexico where he spent over 20 winters.
John was predeceased by his parents John and Emily, brother Larry, 3 infant brothers, and also many Aunts, Uncles, and cousins.
He is survived by his four children Ken (Jane), Patricia (Kerry), Bev, and Carmelle; his 11 grandchildren Dave, Alesha, Adam, Dustin, Lindsay, Michael, Brad, Chris, Brody, Devon, and Joanna; his 10 greatgrandchildren Lella Mae, Charlotte Hope, Rowan Moss, Xavier Jackson, William Alexander, Lincoln Evan, Kimberly Ava, Tyson Christopher, Jameson, and Heidi Natasha.
Per John’s wishes, a private family gathering will be held at a later date.
